As an ESPN NFL reporter speculated where a big-name free agent would land, Chris Dingman smiled because he knew the location. Dingman, who is in charge of The Dingman Group, is not a rival reporter or a sports agent. As a man behind the scenes he finds out some of the transactions before they are reported. He specializes in a unique business. He relocates athletes, helping them find new homes, move, transport cars and other off-the-field details that go with joining a new team.

COSTA MESA — Coach Travis Turner took the time to blow someone a kiss. The first-year Orange Coast College men's volleyball coach thought it was a good time during the Southern California Regional Playoffs Tuesday. As a lady friend, with three children, headed out the OCC gym, the Pirates' finally took a game against Santa Monica City College. The Corsairs had won the first two games, the same way they did the last time they faced OCC two months ago. But Turner wasn't flustered.

Lolita Harper ORANGE COAST COLLEGE -- Despite the blue skies and scorching heat, summer is officially over for the 22,507 students enrolled at the college. To add to the pain of going to school with the beach just five miles away, students said Tuesday they are faced with parking problems, long lines for books and overcrowded classrooms on campus. Officials said enrollment at the college is up 11.2% from last year and is expected to rise 3% to 4% when fall registration deadlines are reached.

Mike Wade never watched soccer, didn't know the sport, but he became an AYSO referee 15 years ago. He blames his then 6-year-old son Chris for that. "They needed referees back then," said Wade, who tried to distinguish a yellow card from a red card. Which one is for stop? The whistle, he learned it halted play. Now the Newport Beach resident is the country's oldest youth soccer organization's national president. No more blaming his kid. He credits Chris and his two daughters, Katie and Natalie, whom he coached, for sticking with AYSO and becoming its leader.

Steve Virgen SANTA MONICA --There was not much flair or flashiness, but the Orange Coast College football team assuredly got the job done. The Pirates answered several questions and strengthened expectations during its scrimmage at Santa Monica City College Friday. For one, the Bucs have found their starting quarterback. After the scrimmage with the Corsairs, OCC Coach Mike Taylor named sophomore Jason Kripavicius the starting signal caller for the Bucs' season opener against visiting East Los Angeles Saturday at 7 p.m. The quarterback position had been in the up in the air throughout the preseason.

Tony Altobelli COSTA MESA - If Friday's scrimmage against a very big Santa Monica City College means anything, look for Orange Coast College's football team to be enforcing the aggressiveness, rather than being the target of it. "It's what we're going to do to be successful," Pirate Coach Mike Taylor said. "This year, when you play us, we're gonna take you on." Playing in one of the toughest community college conferences in the nation, OCC will have to play smashmouth football with some of the best in the state.
