Get Newport Harbor High senior Cleo Harrington and junior Carlee Kapana together out of the water, and they are prone to fits of giggling. They play off each other well, which certainly is also true in the water for the Sailors' girls water polo team. The consensus in the water polo community is that they're the top two goalies in the CIF Southern Section, which by extension could make them the top two prep girls' goalies in the country. It's a nice problem for Newport Harbor Coach Bill Barnett to have, except that it's not a problem at all. Last summer, Barnett started instituting a very simple rotation.

Sure, the drive up Highway 101 is scenic, but this weekend's prestigious Santa Barbara Tournament of Champions girls' water polo tournament is far from a vacation. Fifteen of the 16 teams entered are ranked in CIF Southern Section Division 1 or Division 2. For Corona del Mar and Newport Harbor, the tournament provides a chance to move up in the Division 1 rankings. CdM is ranked No. 3, and Newport No. 4, behind Foothill and Laguna Beach. But if the seedings hold, it will be the Back Bay teams meeting in the tournament semifinals on Saturday.

The last four singles sets Corona del Mar High sophomore Elena Fish has played have been tough to swallow. Fish lost three close sets to highly ranked players at Brentwood on Friday in a CIF Southern Section Division 1 second-round match, 6-4, 6-4, 7-5. On Monday afternoon at CdM, Fish fell to another top player, Madison Hale of Santa Barbara, 7-5. Yet she never gave up and kept scrapping for points. CdM junior Shelby Anderson, with whom Fish shares the No. 3 singles spot, is the same way. It's necessary for both to be ready to go, as senior Lauren Thaxter's status is typically day-to-day as she deals with atypical migraine headaches and "auras.
