SANTA ANA - Orange Coast College's softball team gave up three runs in the fourth inning as it fell to host Santa Ana, 4-3, in an Orange Empire Conference matchup. The Pirates (11-7, 0-2 in conference) scored two in the third and one in the sixth inning. Renee Snyder and Angelia Valdez got the two OCC RBIs. Kristin Degree went 2 for 3 and scored one Pirates' run. OCC's Noelle Espinoza, who hit a double, and Renee Snyder, who had a triple, got the only extra-base hits in the game.

Orange Coast College dropped a 7-5 decision to visiting Santa Ana in Orange Empire Conference baseball Thursday, dropping the Pirates to 10-8 in an up-and-down conference campaign. The Bucs, 25-10 overall, let it get away early as Santa Ana scored four in the first inning and led, 6-2, after 11/2. Both teams had eight hits and played errorless ball Donnie Murphy was Coast's leading hitter with three doubles in four at-bats, with two runs and an RBI. Ryan Marcos was 2 for 4 and Joey Morrison was 2 for 3. "We hit the ball hard all day, they just made some defensively plays," said OCC Coach John Altobelli, who'll send his Bucs back to the field on Saturday, at Santa Ana (11-7 in the OEC)

SANTA ANA - The Orange Coast College men's water polo team featured 12 different scorers, including Jeff Sample's five goals, in its 18-8 Orange Empire Conference victory at Santa Ana Wednesday. Caine Littrell and Greg Worthing, both Newport Harbor High products, scored two goals each, while Sergio Gonzalez, Mitch Probert, Kyle Gorham, Matt McKinney, Anthony Spezza, Kevin Cooney, Matt DeMartino, Ryan McGrath and Billy Swanson tallied one each to help the Pirates improve to 7-6, 2-1 in the OEC. Santa Ana dropped to 0-2 in the OEC. The California Vikings of the City of Costa Mesa Recreation Division's Youth Flag Football program, went 3-0 to win a recent tournament against Orange County teams. The Vikings, comprised of third- and fourth-graders, won the 2002 Southern California Municipal Athletic Federation-Orange County Flag Football Tournament C-Division championship in overtime over Santa Ana. Representing Costa Mesa, the Vikings (9-0) trailed Santa Ana, 12-0, in the title game . Andrew Karlson picked off a Santa Ana pass and returned it 20 yards for a TD. On the last play of the game, Kannon Stone completed a 10-yard pass to Andrew Dischner for a game-tying touchdown, then won with an overtime tie-breaker.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL Orange Coast 88, Santa Ana 46 SANTA ANA — Sophomore Courtney Ford scored 20 points and grabbed 12 rebounds for the Pirates in the Orange Empire Conference game at the Saints’ gym Wednesday. Sophomore Katie Kissee had 17 points, including three three-pointers, while sophomore Brittany Taylor finished with 10 points for Orange Coast (21-3, 5-1 in conference), ranked No. 3 in Southern California and No. 5 in the state.

A homicide victim found in Newport Beach previously sold drugs for a gang tied to the Mexican Mafia, according to a federal grand jury indictment released Tuesday. Nancy Hammour, whose body was found under the Newport Bay Bridge on Labor Day, sold methamphetamine for a gang that operated in Orange County between March 2011 and June 2012, according to the indictment. Hammour, 28, of Santa Ana, was one of dozens of defendants swept up in a wide-ranging multiagency investigation targeting gangs operating in Orange County.
