The California Vikings of the City of Costa Mesa Recreation Division's Youth Flag Football program, went 3-0 to win a recent tournament against Orange County teams. The Vikings, comprised of third- and fourth-graders, won the 2002 Southern California Municipal Athletic Federation-Orange County Flag Football Tournament C-Division championship in overtime over Santa Ana. Representing Costa Mesa, the Vikings (9-0) trailed Santa Ana, 12-0, in the title game . Andrew Karlson picked off a Santa Ana pass and returned it 20 yards for a TD. On the last play of the game, Kannon Stone completed a 10-yard pass to Andrew Dischner for a game-tying touchdown, then won with an overtime tie-breaker.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL Orange Coast 88, Santa Ana 46 SANTA ANA — Sophomore Courtney Ford scored 20 points and grabbed 12 rebounds for the Pirates in the Orange Empire Conference game at the Saints’ gym Wednesday. Sophomore Katie Kissee had 17 points, including three three-pointers, while sophomore Brittany Taylor finished with 10 points for Orange Coast (21-3, 5-1 in conference), ranked No. 3 in Southern California and No. 5 in the state.

The Big Canyon Country Club will try for its sixth Jones Cup championship ? and second straight ? when the ninth annual event takes place July 8 at Newport Beach Country Club. The site, which also features the Toshiba Classic, will also have Santa Ana, Mesa Verde and Newport Beach Country Clubs vying to become the Jones Cup champ. The winners are also known to have ultimate bragging rights for the rest of the year. Rosters of each club are coming about as club championship events have yet to be played at some of the clubs.

LA HABRA - Corona del Mar High's Sea Kings captured their second straight at the North Orange County Tournament at Sonora High Thursday with a 52-49 boys basketball victory over Santa Ana, keyed by a strong display of man-to-man defense in the third quarter and the double digit scoring of Zach Brewster (16) and Eric Snell (11). "We're gradually starting to figure things out," said CdM Coach Paul Orris. The wins sends CdM (3-5) back to Sonora today to face high-scoring and rapid-fire Montclair Prep at 4:40 in a consolation semifinal.

SANTA ANA - Orange Coast College unleashed an 18-hit attack in a 10-1 Orange Empire Conference victory over host Santa Ana Saturday. Chris Sinner got it started with a leadoff home run in the first inning, dispatching a 2-2 pitch to deef right, and the Pirates were off and running. For Sinner, who was 4 for 5 with two runs and two RBIs, it was his first home run in two years. He also doubled. Ryan Hanson added a two-run shot in the third inning to highlight a five-run uprising.
