It is a small and wonderful community zoo. Friends of the Santa Ana Zoo gathered within the compound on Saturday night to celebrate another year with our fur-covered friends sharing the planet. The passion and the purpose of the zoo staff, led by Director Kent Yamaguchi , is infectious. The Orange County crowd of nearly 400 patrons came to pledge assistance, ensuring the zoo's vitality and ability to properly care for and protect its residents. In particular, the funds raised will help to purchase a much-needed "bobcat" tractor.

At most Newport-Mesa social events the arriving guests are greeted by very attractive women serving as hostesses prepared to present table assignments and other pertinent paraphernalia. Last Saturday evening in Santa Ana the arriving crowd was greeted by a chicken, an iguana, a parrot and a snake. It was Zoofari 2007, the super fun adult’s night at the Santa Ana Zoo helping to bring in the bucks to take care of God’s little creatures. The annual Zoofari was labeled “Tango in the Tall Grass,” and was presented by an organization known as Friends of the Santa Ana Zoo. The party attracted nearly 400 guests and it is estimated it will raise nearly $80,000 net with proceeds earmarked to benefit a new habitat for the giant anteater’s exhibit.

B.W. COOK It began with a sunset VIP champagne reception hosted by Volare Trattoria at the Crean Family Farm. Well-dressed patrons, showing off a little summer black tie, mingled with the animals in the Crean petting zoo, part of a new interactive exhibit at the Santa Ana Zoo. As the Grey Eagle Band played on -- everything had to be animal themed -- ladies in summer gowns bent over to pet the goats, tickle the...

This was one party that was a real zoo. Zoofari 2002, produced by Friends of the Santa Ana Zoo, attracted a major contingent of Newport-Mesa animal lovers to one summer party that was surely a replacement for those unable to attend an African safari this season. It was chaired by the dedicated Sandy Pignone with support from Newport's indefatigable Debbie Newmeyer, who, with her husband Tom and his firm, underwrote a substantial portion of the evening.

B.W. COOK It was a welcome party introducing a new member of the community to his neighbors. There was a difference, for the new member of our community has come to Orange County from South America and happens to be a monkey named Sazoo. The good news is that he fits in just perfectly with all of the rest of us. Sazoo's welcome party unfolded recently at the Santa Ana Zoo, where friends of the animal kingdom led by Newport's Debbie and Tom Newmeyer threw a magical evening under the stars, which has come to be known as the annual summer Zoofari on the Riviera.

Fridge was there. Mallory was there too. Fridge happens to be a 250-plus-pound goat, and Mallory is a mallard duck that doesn’t like people. Can you blame her? After all, some of the nicest people are animals. Fridge, Mallory and the rest of the gang, including a whole bunch of “Funky Monkeys,” turned out for the 2009 Zoofari Gala at the Santa Ana Zoo. There were a few humans there as well, brought together by chairs of the evening Sandy Segerstrom Daniels and KOCE television anchor Ed Arnold . The executive director of the Friends of the Santa Ana Zoo, Cathi Decker , joined the president of the zoo support group, Jon Ribble , in welcoming the crowd for an evening of childlike fantasy under the stars.

They came to finally determine just who murdered the sinister Mr. Divelopmor, who, in 1998, threatened to mass murder the monkeys at the Santa Ana Zoo, then take over the zoo from the city and turn the property into a mall. Divelopmor was murdered and his plot foiled. The case, however, was never solved. Last Saturday night in Orange County, 430 patrons of the Santa Ana Zoo, including an impressive contingent of Newport-Mesa residents, converged on the park at sundown to solve the case.
