MISSION VIEJO - Senior forward Evita Castillo scored 15 points and grabbed 12 rebounds (seven offensive) as Newport Harbor High's girls basketball team defeated San Pedro, 50-23, in a consolation game Saturday in the Mission Viejo Tournament. The Sailors (2-10) led from beginning to end, outscoring San Pedro in every quarter. "Everyone as a team played tremendous," Newport Harbor Coach Jen Thompson said. "We played four quarters. Marjorie Reday Marjorie(Peg) Reday, supporter of the arts in Orange County, writer, poet, and world traveler, died July 9 at her home in Newport Beach, following a long battle with cancer. She was 88. Born Marjorie Gladys Sullivan on October 14, 1920 in Carrum, Victoria, Australia, she was the daughter of Gerald Joseph Sullivan and Gladys Wray Sullivan. As a young woman during World War II she worked for General Douglas MacArthur at the Allied Forces command center in Australia, where she met her husband, American Lt. Ladislaw Reday.

A man found inside Nicolas Cage’s home wearing nothing but one of the actor’s jackets pleaded guilty to felony stalking Thursday, authorities said. Robert Dennis Furo, 45, of San Pedro received credit for time served and will be in a 30-day lockdown at a hospital before entering into a sober-living rehabilitation home in Tustin for up to five months as part of his plea deal, according to Furo’s attorney, Jack Kayajanian. Furo will also be placed on three years’ formal probation as part of the plea.

Submitted by Heather McNamara Continuing its successful 2009 club basketball season, the Newport Lightning seventh grade boys AAU basketball team won the Fifth Annual San Pedro "Bad Boys at the Beach" tournament the weekend of June 27-28.  In pool play, Newport defeated San Gabriel Valley 41-36, and then outhustled the PCH Spartans 36-20.  In the championship finals, the Lightning beat a strong Palos Verdes Cagers team, 53-47, to take home the first place trophy.  "Our defense really came through this weekend," said Coach Mike Flamson.

Of course I let my two teenage kids watch "The OC." We usually watch it together. How else would they know what to aspire to? We are clearly not living the proper O.C. lifestyle since our lives don't resemble the show's characters in very many ways, so we need to know what we're missing. John Blaich On Feb. 2, 1976, exactly 27 years ago Sunday night, in a dense fog, the motor ship Coos Bay ran aground on the Balboa Peninsula at Island Avenue. The former World War II landing ship tank was coming up the coast to San Pedro. She barely missed the Balboa Pier before running aground about 10 p.m., just after high tide. The ship was broad side to the beach with the bow pointing slightly seaward. The shipwreck was first observed by a Newport Beach Police unit, who reported the incident to the Orange County Harbor Department, which reported it to the Coast Guard at Long Beach.
