MISSION VIEJO - Senior forward Evita Castillo scored 15 points and grabbed 12 rebounds (seven offensive) as Newport Harbor High's girls basketball team defeated San Pedro, 50-23, in a consolation game Saturday in the Mission Viejo Tournament. The Sailors (2-10) led from beginning to end, outscoring San Pedro in every quarter. "Everyone as a team played tremendous," Newport Harbor Coach Jen Thompson said. "We played four quarters. We talked to each other and Evita made sure everyone was in the right place on the press and on defense.

This 138-foot long steel motor yacht was homeported off Balboa Island from May to September 1939. The owner, Commodore William A. Bartholomas, Jr., of Newport Harbor Yacht Club, put down two large moorings off his home at 118 W. Bay Front on Balboa Island to accommodate his large yacht.Bath Iron Works in Bath, Maine built Paragon in 1929. She was 138-foot-2 with a beam of 19-feet-4 and a draft of 9-feet-6. Paragon was powered by two Winston air starting direct reversible diesel engines, providing a cruising speed of 14 knots.

The Newport Beach Riptide, an under-18 team affiliated with the Pacific Coast Fastpitch Girls Softball league, went undefeated in the Baldwin Park QuickTurn tournament on Sunday. The Riptide won all three games, defeating the San Pedro Fullmooners, 8-0, QuickTurn, 7-1, and Moreno Valley, 19-0, in four innings. Alanna Snedigar led the offense by going 7 for 9 with five RBIs in the three games while Newport Harbor High's Julianne Bass tallied four hits in five at-bats.

Marjorie Reday Marjorie(Peg) Reday, supporter of the arts in Orange County, writer, poet, and world traveler, died July 9 at her home in Newport Beach, following a long battle with cancer. She was 88. Born Marjorie Gladys Sullivan on October 14, 1920 in Carrum, Victoria, Australia, she was the daughter of Gerald Joseph Sullivan and Gladys Wray Sullivan. As a young woman during World War II she worked for General Douglas MacArthur at the Allied Forces command center in Australia, where she met her husband, American Lt. Ladislaw Reday.

A man found inside Nicolas Cage’s home wearing nothing but one of the actor’s jackets pleaded guilty to felony stalking Thursday, authorities said. Robert Dennis Furo, 45, of San Pedro received credit for time served and will be in a 30-day lockdown at a hospital before entering into a sober-living rehabilitation home in Tustin for up to five months as part of his plea deal, according to Furo’s attorney, Jack Kayajanian. Furo will also be placed on three years’ formal probation as part of the plea.
