MISSION VIEJO - Senior forward Evita Castillo scored 15 points and grabbed 12 rebounds (seven offensive) as Newport Harbor High's girls basketball team defeated San Pedro, 50-23, in a consolation game Saturday in the Mission Viejo Tournament. The Sailors (2-10) led from beginning to end, outscoring San Pedro in every quarter. "Everyone as a team played tremendous," Newport Harbor Coach Jen Thompson said. "We played four quarters. We talked to each other and Evita made sure everyone was in the right place on the press and on defense.

This 138-foot long steel motor yacht was homeported off Balboa Island from May to September 1939. The owner, Commodore William A. Bartholomas, Jr., of Newport Harbor Yacht Club, put down two large moorings off his home at 118 W. Bay Front on Balboa Island to accommodate his large yacht.Bath Iron Works in Bath, Maine built Paragon in 1929. She was 138-foot-2 with a beam of 19-feet-4 and a draft of 9-feet-6. Paragon was powered by two Winston air starting direct reversible diesel engines, providing a cruising speed of 14 knots.

Couples played using the two-odd, two-even scoring system. Both players' scores were used on the even holes while only one score was needed on the odd numbered holes.

The Newport Beach Riptide, an under-18 team affiliated with the Pacific Coast Fastpitch Girls Softball league, went undefeated in the Baldwin Park QuickTurn tournament on Sunday. The Riptide won all three games, defeating the San Pedro Fullmooners, 8-0, QuickTurn, 7-1, and Moreno Valley, 19-0, in four innings. Alanna Snedigar led the offense by going 7 for 9 with five RBIs in the three games while Newport Harbor High's Julianne Bass tallied four hits in five at-bats.

Marjorie Reday Marjorie(Peg) Reday, supporter of the arts in Orange County, writer, poet, and world traveler, died July 9 at her home in Newport Beach, following a long battle with cancer. She was 88. Born Marjorie Gladys Sullivan on October 14, 1920 in Carrum, Victoria, Australia, she was the daughter of Gerald Joseph Sullivan and Gladys Wray Sullivan. As a young woman during World War II she worked for General Douglas MacArthur at the Allied Forces command center in Australia, where she met her husband, American Lt. Ladislaw Reday.

Raymond Hurt Jr. Born 1/31/1931 in San Pedro, Ca. died 11/15/2012 He worked as a longshoreman/checker on the docks of Long Beach and Los Angeles for 52 yrs. While there he got his education at Cal State Long Beach and went on to teach special education at Estancia High School in Costa Mesa, CA for 20 years. He leaves behind his wife Stephany, 3 children from his first marriage, Raymond (Skip) Hurt of Tuftonboro NH, Robert Hurt of Missoula MT  and Pamela Arroues of Helena MT, 14 grand kids and 1 great-grand child.

A man found inside Nicolas Cage’s home wearing nothing but one of the actor’s jackets pleaded guilty to felony stalking Thursday, authorities said. Robert Dennis Furo, 45, of San Pedro received credit for time served and will be in a 30-day lockdown at a hospital before entering into a sober-living rehabilitation home in Tustin for up to five months as part of his plea deal, according to Furo’s attorney, Jack Kayajanian. Furo will also be placed on three years’ formal probation as part of the plea.

For the second straight week, the Corona del Mar High and Newport Harbor sailing teams qualified for national competition. CdM finished second at the Pacific Coast Championships Team Race regatta at Mission Bay Yacht Club in San Diego Sunday. Newport Harbor was third. Both qualified to compete for the Baker Trophy May 24-26 at Davis Island Yacht Club in Tampa, Fla. There they will compete in the Interscholastic Sailing Assn. Team Racing Championship. CdM finished behind Point Loma, as the Pacific Coast Interscholastic Sailing Assn.

Submitted by Heather McNamara Continuing its successful 2009 club basketball season, the Newport Lightning seventh grade boys AAU basketball team won the Fifth Annual San Pedro "Bad Boys at the Beach" tournament the weekend of June 27-28.  In pool play, Newport defeated San Gabriel Valley 41-36, and then outhustled the PCH Spartans 36-20.  In the championship finals, the Lightning beat a strong Palos Verdes Cagers team, 53-47, to take home the first place trophy.  "Our defense really came through this weekend," said Coach Mike Flamson.

Of course I let my two teenage kids watch "The OC." We usually watch it together. How else would they know what to aspire to? We are clearly not living the proper O.C. lifestyle since our lives don't resemble the show's characters in very many ways, so we need to know what we're missing. Watching together usually generates some stimulating family conversations: "Where's my Range Rover, Dad?" "Can I move to the pool house?" "Why don't we have a pool house?
