NEWPORT BEACH — Sitting on an oversized plush chair in baseball legend Chuck Finley's Newport Beach home, actress Tawny Kitaen seems to be in a much different place than she was eight years ago. A soccer goal is visible in the backyard, and her daughter's art covers the refrigerator in the family home. Her adopted dog, Woody, nuzzles Kitaen as she talks about a new off-camera passion: helping others. A volunteer at Kathy's House, a shelter for at-risk women in San Juan Capistrano, and a member of the board of directors at Testimony Life Resources, an alternative counseling center, Kitaen appears to be a far cry from her role as the eccentric star of "The Surreal Life," or the woman battling a dependency on prescription pills on "Celebrity Rehab.

COSTA MESA — Austin Di Giulio is not seeded in the boys' 14 singles division of the Costa Mesa Summer Junior Classic. But that's only because he's 10. So it might've appeared he completed an upset of sorts when he beat No. 2-seeded Alastair Hurry, a Corona del Mar resident, Wednesday at the Costa Mesa Tennis Center. But a look at the scores didn't make the win look like such a shocker. Di Giulio, a Newport Beach resident, won, 6-0, 6-3. He advanced to today's quarterfinals.

It would seem that Samantha Smith, at 17, has the musical world by the strings. She opened for Al Stewart at the Coach House in San Juan Capistrano over the weekend before an audience of 500. But that’s just one notch along the neck of her acoustic guitar. The Newport Beach resident and senior at Orange Coast Middle College High School also created the Young Singers of Orange County, an official nonprofit choir that tours and sings at public events. A few months ago, the 35-member choir managed to raise $2,000 for the children in Haiti.

NEWPORT BEACH — Sophomore Mike Moorhead shot three-under-par 32, which included a hole-in-one, to help lead the Corona del Mar High boys’ golf team to a huge nonleague win over Servite Tuesday at Newport Beach Country Club. So just how big was the Sea Kings’ 182-185 victory? “That is the best win in my 12 years of coaching,” CdM Coach Mike Starkweather said. “It’s just a phenomenal win. To beat a team that is that accomplished, they were CIF champs last year, I’m still in shock.
