Two golfers from the Newport-Mesa area had successful weekends at a Toyota Tour Cup series tournament. Mike Moorhead, a Corona del Mar High junior, tied for fourth, and Estancia junior Jake Knapp collected 30 points by finishing tied for fifth in the 49-player tournament Oct. 16-17 at the par-72 Cypress Ridge Golf Course in Arroyo Grande. Moorhead finished one-over (73-72 – 145), two shots behind tournament champion Jason Semthiti (one-under; 73-70 – 143) from Los Angeles.

OJAI - Two local doubles teams are just one victory away from a title while Stanford senior Geoff Abrams is two wins from the men's Pac-10 singles championship at the 100th annual Ojai Valley Tennis Tournament. Abrams, the No. 2 seed and a graduate of Newport Harbor, swept Jan-Noel Grinda of UCLA, 7-5, 6-3 during Friday's quarterfinals. He will face college teammate K.J. Hippensteel in today's semifinals at 11 a.m. Caylan Leslie of Newport Beach and Ashley Backus of San Diego had little trouble against Leigh Ann Merryman and Carolyn Mitchell in a 6-2, 6-0, victory in the girls 18s doubles semifinals.

MATTHEWS ADVANCES OJAI ? Corona del Mar High senior Fabian Matthews won his first two CIF singles division rounds Thursday at the 108th annual Ojai Valley Tennis Tournament. Matthews, the top seed, got by Francesco D?Arcangelo of Cathedral Catholic in the first round, 6-4, 6-2. He then topped Connor Karen of Adolfo Camarillo, 6-2, 6-2. Estancia senior Bradley Fisher lost in the first round of the division, 6-4, 6-2, to Christopher Kenney of Harvard-Westlake. In the CIF doubles division, CdM junior Chris Damion and freshman Shane Korber won their first-round match against Vinh Ly and Greg Punsalan of Adolfo Camarillo, 7-6, 6-3. A Costa Mesa Girl Scout is working toward her Silver Award by dedicating her project to helping an animal sanctuary in the San Jacinto Mountains.Many 13-year-olds would have a hard time committing to anything for a year of their life. Not Alyssa Allison. The Costa Mesa resident and dedicated Girl Scout has been working hard for the past several months on her Silver Award project, which is the highest honor a Girl Scout younger than 14 can earn. Although the first stage of the project is complete, Alyssa will continue with the project throughout the year.

COSTA MESA — The Orange Coast College baseball team jumped out early and held on for a 13-8 win over Orange Empire Conference rival Saddleback in the opening round of the four-team, double-elimination Southern California Super Regional on Friday at OCC’s Wendell Pickens Field. With the win, the second-seeded Pirates (32-13) will stay at OCC and take on Cypress today at noon. With the loss, Saddleback (29-19) will play at Golden West College at 11 a.m. and face Mt. San Jacinto in an elimination game.

BASEBALL UC Irvine 1, Nevada 0 IRVINE — Starter Daniel Bibona struck out a season-high 11 batters to lead No. 10-ranked UC Irvine to a shutout victory Friday at Anteater Ballpark. Bibona improved to 3-1 after hurling seven innings, walking two and yielding one hit. The lefty faced the minimum through five innings. The Anteater pitching staff recorded 15 strikeouts, one shy of the single-game mark of 16 set in 2006. Catcher Francis Larson helped to break the scoreless tie in the fifth with a one-out triple to left-center.

OJAI — Corona del Mar High's Dustin Hladek and Fabian Matthews know that the Ojai Valley Tennis Tournament is prestigious. But they haven't had many problems with the competition so far. Hladek and Matthews topped Evan Hashimoto and Ali Makmalchi of Santa Margarita, 6-0, 6-1, in the CIF division doubles quarterfinals on Friday, moving to today's semifinal against Trent Brown and D.J. Jaehnig of Rancho Bernardo. Hladek and Matthews also beat Nick Chang and Albert Chu of San Marino, 6-2, 6-0, in the Round of 16. In their first four rounds, the No. 1 seeded team won its matches by a combined score of 40 games to eight.

State parks all over California face the prospect of closure or heavy cuts in services, but a number of lawmakers are convinced the California State Park’s Office is pulling a fast one on taxpayers. Rep. Dana Rohrabacher, commenting on proposed cuts at Bolsa Chica State Beach park that would reduce its seasonal lifeguard staff by 50%, said the proposal was nothing more than a “scare tactic” characteristic of bureaucracies seeking to preserve their financial footing.
