IRVINE — In addition to knocking off the top-ranked team in the country Saturday night, the Virginia Cavaliers also beat the odds. And with four errors and an atypical lack of timely hitting, some might suggest UC Irvine helped beat itself. The Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament champions, ranked in the top 10 in several polls, posted a 5-0 victory over UC Irvine in the winners bracket semifinal of the NCAA Regional at Anteater Ballpark. The loss drops the Anteaters (44-14)

IRVINE — As its revered senior shortstop, Ben Orloff, said when it had ended, the top-ranked UC Irvine baseball team “emptied the tank” in the first home regional in the program’s suddenly storied history. But it was No. 7–ranked Virginia that just kept pouring it on. The Cavaliers opened the four-team regional by beating what many consider the best pitcher in the history of the college game, San Diego State’s future multi-millionaire Stephen Strasburg.

NEWPORT BEACH - What little breathing room there was for competitors during the first 36 holes of the 113th Southern California Golf Assn. Amateur championship, Xander Schauffele bottled enough to sustain him all the way to the top of the leaderboard. Big Canyon Country Club rendered some sweaty, exhausted faces as the sun set Friday evening, with only six of 80-plus players finishing the first two rounds under par. Schauffele, who transferred to San Diego State from Long Beach, bolted to a four-under-68 on his first 18 and followed with a one-under 71 on the afternoon round to take a three-shot lead over 2011 California Amateur champion Bhavik Patel (71-71 - 142)
