SAN CLEMENTE — The San Clemente High girls' soccer team planned to relentlessly attack Corona del Mar. The Sea Kings planned to counterattack and possibly score on a set piece. Both plans nearly worked in Thursday afternoon's CIF Southern Section Division I quarterfinal match at San Clemente High. Only the top-seeded Tritons move on. San Clemente sophomore Danielle Mellem scored midway through the second half and the hosts held on to win, 1-0, ending Corona del Mar's season in the quarterfinals for the third straight year.

COSTA MESA — If you're lucky, you just might see them: a pack of six Siberian huskies flying through the morning fog with an "urban musher" in tow. To spare his team of dogs from training in the midday heat, Rancy Reyes, 50, an urban musher from Costa Mesa, said he trains his huskies — all rescue animals — early in the morning and late at night. "We are very cognizant of the heat," Reyes said of the heavily furred dogs that are more at home in snowy climates than sunny Orange County, but are "born to pull.

COSTA MESA — One of Estancia High's top scorers sat for the first 12 minutes of a nonleague boys' basketball game Tuesday night. Davon Joyner violated a team rule the day before the Eagles hosted San Clemente. "If you don't practice, you don't [start]," Coach Agustin Heredia said. "[Joyner] showed up [to practice]. He just didn't practice. He said he was hurt. " Joyner's absence from the starting lineup hurt the Eagles right away. They trailed, 12-0, in the first three and a half minutes, missing five shots and turning the ball over four times during the stretch.

NEWPORT BEACH —Newport Harbor High football coach Jeff Brinkley decided to go for the win in overtime against San Clemente Friday night. The big gamble did not pay off as the Sailors lost to the Tritons, 21-20, after failing to convert a two-point conversion. The Tars lost a more important No. 2, as in Buzzy Yokoyama, earlier in the nonleague game. The junior that drove defenders back with his tenacious running style in his first three games as Newport Harbor's running back no longer could stand on his own two feet in the fourth game.

Booze, barbecue, and ’80s glam metal. What more could you ask for? Today, the second annual Orange County Beer Festival will take over Irvine Lake from 1 to 4 p.m. with more than 60 domestic and international brews flowing, including beer from a Newport Beach brewer. The event promises food trucks and entertainment from Metal Shop, a hair metal band covering the likes of Gun N’ Roses, AC/DC, Motley Crüe and Twisted Sister. Beer festivals are not the time to drink the beers you know you’re comfortable with, but a chance to embark on a new adventure with a new brewery, a new recipe or new flavors.

Countywide Supervisors put Internet plans on hold A plan to create a county-owned wireless Internet system to serve public safety agencies and residents of low-income neighborhoods has been put on hold because of the county’s budget crunch. The Orange County Board of Supervisors had been scheduled to discuss the $11-million project, which would be paid for primarily through grants from the federal stimulus program, but the discussion was deleted from the board’s agenda at the last minute.

Last week I read a Orange County Local News Network article about Trestles. The gist was that the estimated 300,000 people that visit Trestles each year have to make a risky railroad track crossing and a coalition had been formed to construct a safer crossing for pedestrians and cyclists. Now I’ve never heard of surfers asking for anything to be made safer so was immediately skeptical and figured there had to be more to it. The “coalition” was identified as the Open Architecture Network, the San Onofre Foundation and the Surfrider Foundation, and they had opened a competition for architectural designs of the crossing structure.
