More than 125 residents and community activists gathered in Costa Mesa to discuss Banning Ranch, a proposed development in West Newport that opponents argue will burden humans and wildlife. The Thursday night meeting at the Neighborhood Community Center was organized by the Banning Ranch Conservancy, a grass-roots group that has long fought the project, which calls for 1,375 homes, commercial space and a small hotel within portions of the 400-acre, privately owned property. Terry Welsh, president of the conservancy, called Banning Ranch the "largest parcel of unprotected coastal open space remaining in Orange County.

PCGFS PLACES SECOND The Pacific Coast Girls Fastpitch Softball 10-and-under All-Star Rebels from Newport-Mesa placed second at the Southern California American Softball Assn. Junior Olympic District Championship Tournament in Buena Park July 6. With the finish at the three-day event featuring teams from Orange County, Long Beach and the South Bay, PCGFS earned its first berth into the ASA Junior Olympic State Championship. The three-day tournament ends today in Lancaster.

COSTA MESA - Down by four strokes entering play at Santa Ana Country Club, the Newport Harbor High boys golf team watched senior Pete Watson card a 40 in the late going as the Sailors edged highly regarded San Clemente, 398-400, in nonleague play Wednesday. Harbor had trailed aftrer nine holes by four, but Wednesday's 202-208 score over nine holes at SACC turned the tide, with Watson outdueling San Clemente's No. 1 for the deciding points. Newport trimmed the deficit to two with the first quartet of golfers, then tied it up with the second tier before Watson snapped the tie. Overall, Daniel Kush was Harbor's leading golfer with a 73 (36 on Wednesday)

Katherine Erickson and Nicholas Ward Joe and Alesia Erickson of Costa Mesa, and Ray and Wendy Ward of Carmel Valley announce the wedding of their children Katherine Rose Erickson and Nicholas David Ward. The young couple met while at school at UCSD and continued their education at Univ. of Washington in Seattle.  Their wedding is planned for April 5 in San Clemente.

GIRLS' BASKETBALL Estancia 52, Newport Harbor 33 COSTA MESA - Celia Duran scored 11 points to lead a strong team performance by the Eagles in the nonleague game Saturday. Maya Van Den Heever had 10 points and Bryanna Vernon hit three three-pointers and finished with nine points for Estancia (15-8). McKenna Izzi led the Sailors with nine points and eight rebounds. Bela Raimondi and Jordan Perry scored seven points and Jen Lopez had three points and seven rebounds for Newport Harbor.

NEWPORT BEACH - The Newport Beach Breakers, a girls-under-10 progressive plus team from AYSO Region 97, won the inaugural Newport Invitation U-10 Soccer Tournament last weekend. The Breakers posted victories over Mission Viejo, North Irvine and Newport Beach Gold, placing the squad in the championship game against San Clemente. After a tough defensive battle, the Breakers outlasted San Clemente, thanks to solid efforts from Meghan McMahon, Maggie Bernay, Kelly Heenan, Katy Storch, Amy Snyder and Stephanie Nealey.

HUNTINGTON BEACH - The Newport Harbor High boys volleyball team won its first two pool-play matches Friday in the Orange County Championships at Edison High. The Sailors defeated Esperanza, 15-10, 15-8, then outlasted San Clemente, 15-10, 10-15, 15-12. Newport completes pool play today and, should it finish in the top two in its pool, will advance to the quarterfinals. Semifinals will also be held Saturday at Edison, with the final scheduled Monday night at the same site.

The Newport Knights defeated San Clemente in a sudden-death shootout to determine the AYSO under-12 championship May 8, following a 1-1 tie to end regulation. Chris O'Campo scored the winning shootout goal for Newport, then Chris Mendez blocked a San Clemente attempt to preserve the win. The first round of the shootout ended 3-3 with Knight goals by Austin Webster, Zac Chocek and Juan Gonzalez. Gonzalez also scored the Knights goal during regulation, with an assist to Jay Ordaz.

SAN CLEMENTE - Five Newport-Mesa District players, including three from Corona del Mar High, made the first-round cut Monday in the 36-hole Pacific Coast League boys golf championships at San Clemente Golf Course, where the final round will be held today at 11 a.m. The top 12 and ties advanced to the final round, including CdM's Brad Chamberlain (74), Alex Chikovani (74) and Jason Wishengrad (77).
