"He was an athlete and a coach, and he wouldn't have wanted me to be anywhere else. Consequently, I didn't want to be anywhere else. SAN CLEMENTE - Coach Jeff Brinkley called Friday's night game the most physical of the year for Newport Harbor High. By the number of personal-foul penalties called on San Clemente, you might understand why. The Sailors fought back the right way and they had more than a fighter's chance at San Clemente, ranked No. 4 in the CIF Southern Section Pac-5 Division. But just like the first two games of the year, the Sailors fell at the end. San Clemente won, 24-12, and stayed perfect at 5-0, while the Sailors searched for answers.

NEWPORT BEACH — One San Clemente High volleyball player walked onto the Newport Harbor court with a helmet. The helmet did not have a facemask, but it looked like one used in the 1930s in football. The player was not the only one from his team who needed protection Thursday night in the second round of the CIF Southern Section Division I playoffs. In the third set, Scott Hair raced toward the stands to get to a live ball, but a Newport Harbor football player sitting in the first row grabbed Hair and then pushed him. San Clemente Coach Ken Goldstone raised his hands in objection and Newport Harbor Coach Dan Glenn understood why. He saw it all happen.
