Former Corona del Mar High standout Joe Eberhard, a sophomore in 2010-11 at Irvine Valley Community College, has committed to continue his men's basketball career at Sacramento State, IVC coach Jerry Hernandez has announced. The 6-foot-5 forward, who began his collegiate career at UC Irvine, was a two-year starter for the Lasers and helped Irvine Valley to two of the best seasons in program history. Irvine Valley made the Elite Eight of the playoffs each year and reached the state tournament for the first time in school history during the 2009-10 campaign.

IRVINE ? Jaime Martinez's two-run single in the eighth inning gave UC Irvine's baseball team a 5-4 nonconference victory over Sacramento State on Saturday. Blair Erickson pitched a scoreless ninth inning for his sixth save of the season and 33rd of his career. The junior is one save away from tying former Cal State Fullerton star Chad Cordero for second place on the all-time Big West Conference save list. Kyle Necke picked up his first win of the season for UCI (11-6). Dylan Axelrod pitched 1 1/3 scoreless innings.

The UC Irvine men's basketball team will attempt to even its record tonight against visiting Sacramento State in a 7:05 nonconference game at the Bren Events Center. UCI (1-2) enters with a two-game losing streak after dropping road dates at USC and UCLA last week. Coach Pat Douglass' Anteaters are hoping to avenge a 64-56 loss last season at Sacramento State against a Hornet squad that comes in 1-3. The Hornets' pressure defense has helped create 175 combined turnovers, 86 by Sacramento State, in four games.

SACRAMENTO -- Sophomore midfielder Darbo Acuna converted a penalty kick in the 61st minute to break a 2-2 tie and propel the visiting UC Irvine men's soccer team to a 3-2 nonconference victory Sunday at Sacramento State. A Sacramento State defender was called for a hand ball in the 18-yard box to set up the penalty kick. It was the second goal of the game for Acuna, who converted an assist from senior midfielder Jason Thompson to forge a 1-1 tie in the seventh minute.

SACRAMENTO - Costa Mesa High junior Sharon Day, who won the CIF State Championship last week in the girls high jump, captured another prestigious title Saturday night in the national Golden West Track and Field Invitational at Sacramento State. Day, who cleared a personal-best 5-feet-11 in the State Finals at Cerritos College, went 5-10 to win the Golden West meet. She cleared 5-10 on her second attempt, but missed an attempt at 6-feet. "Nobody else cleared 5-10.

SACRAMENTO — UC Irvine sophomore Lauren Collins scored 3,370 points Thursday, putting her in 11th place after the first day of the heptathlon at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships at Sacramento State. The Big West champion had marks of 14.21 seconds in the 100-meter hurdles, 5 feet, 10 inches in the high jump, 36-8 1/2 in the shot put and 25.29 in the 200 meters. Gaelle Niare of Southern Methodist University leads the field of 25 competitors with 3,690 points.

Barry Faulkner The UC Irvine men's basketball team stuck it's collective snout in Sacramento State's 1,400-seat Hornet's Nest Saturday night and the result was a 64-56 loss that is sure to sting throughout the Anteaters' two-week holiday haitus. The Anteaters started sluggishly, came on strong in the second half, but could not survive the swarming defense and three-point shooting of the hosts, who ended a four-game losing skid to improve to 4-5. Hornet senior guard Brandon Guyton sank three three-pointers in the first seven minutes, to help Sacramento State, No. 242 in the Sagarin rankings of Division I programs, build an 18-7 lead.

Athena Vasquez, a senior at Newport Harbor High, has signed a letter of intent with the University of Wisconsin to play softball there next year. Vasquez earned first-team All-Sea View League honors last year for the Sailors as a shortstop, and she also received second-team laurels in her freshman and sophomore seasons. Vasquez, a starting guard on the Newport girls basketball team this season, visited the home of the Badgers in late September and made her decision just before the early signing period.

Steve Virgen SACRAMENTO - Costa Mesa High junior Sharon Day, the CIF State champion in the high jump, will compete in the prestigious Golden West Invitational today at Sacramento State. Corona del Mar senior Julie Allen, a distance runner bound for Stanford, has pulled out of the 3,200 meters because of illness. Day will compete in the high jump, scheduled for 7:25 p.m. Day, who won the state high jump title with a 5-foot, 10-inch clearance June 1 at Cerritos College, was thrilled to be invited to the postseason track and field prep meet.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL NAIA Championships SIOUX CITY, Iowa — Shardai Sublett recorded 14 kills to lead Vanguard University to a 28-26, 25-21, 20-25, 25-19 pool-play victory over Bellevue University at the Tyson Events Center Wednesday. Michal Shortridge added 12 kills and Jamie Heenan contributed 10 for the Lions. Setter Meghan Walsh amassed 42 assists and also had 15 digs. Alexandra Griffiths led Vanguard with 18 digs. The Lions (17-11), are making their first appearance in the NAIA Championships, will need to win today against Doane to advance to bracket play in the tournament.

Sacramento State Saturday, 7 p.m. at Sacramento State The Anteaters (4-3) begin a stretch in which they play six of seven games on the road against a Hornets' squad that is 2-2 Coach Russell Turner, in his fourth season at UCI, earned his 50th victory at the school in Sunday's 81-56 triumph over visiting Eastern Washington in the 2K Classic Irvine Subregional. Mamadou Ndiaye, UCI's 7-foot-6 freshman center, broke his own Big West Conference single-game record with 10 blocked shots on Sunday and he entered the week leading the nation with 29 total blocks.

Sacramento State junior Joe Eberhard was recently named the Big Sky Conference Men's Basketball Player of the Week after leading the Hornets to a pair of victories and the program's first 2-0 start since the 2000-01 season. The Corona del Mar High product finished the week averaging 11.5 points, 7.0 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 38.5 minutes per game. He shot 47.4% (nine for 19) from the field and 75 % (three for four) from the free-throw line. He was the team's third leading scorer during the week while pacing the Hornets in rebounding and minutes.

SACRAMENTO — It was a good day for one of the Day high-jumping sisters in Sacramento. Sharon Day, a former Costa Mesa High standout now at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, made her first trip to the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships after a one-year hiatus because of a left broken foot. The junior, who won the event as a sophomore, competed against her sister, Jasmin, a freshman at the University of Arizona. It marked the first time the two advanced to the event together, but it was only Sharon moving on. Sharon was one of 14 high jumpers advancing out of Wednesday's qualifying round to Friday's final at Sacramento State at 5:15 p.m. Sharon cleared 5 feet, 10 3/4 inches, making her one of 10 athletes clearing the mark.

UC Irvine will have three competitors at the NCAA Track and Field Championships in Sacramento today through Saturday. UCI's trio includes junior Julian Eison (high jump), senior Ricky Barnes (1,500 meters) and sophomore Lauren Collins (heptathlon). Eison qualified with a fifth-place finish of 6 feet, 11 inches in the high jump at the NCAA West Regional in Eugene, Ore., last weekend. Barnes, who finished sixth in the 1,500 meters at the regional (3 minutes, 46.71 seconds)

IRVINE ? Coach Dave Serrano has said all season that his UC Irvine baseball team has no superstars. But that hasn't prevented the Anteaters from producing a variety of heroes during the first one-third of their schedule. No one, however, stepped forward Sunday, as Sacramento State rallied for a 4-2 nonconference victory in the three-game series finale to avert a sweep at Anteater Ballpark. The loss was only the second in the last nine games for UCI (11-7), but Serrano said Sunday he has been less than thrilled by his team's recent play.
