Joseph Boo The AKS Swarm youth roller hockey club team won two North American roller hockey Atom Division championships in a row, but the eight-year-olds on this year's team don't remember any of that. None of them, including Costa Mesa's Brett Ollinger and Newport Beach's Evan McNerney, were on either of those teams. While they will be representing AKS Swarm as it tries to win its third consecutive championship trophy, this year's trip to Toronto marks a daunting first trip for the kids.

The Newport Harbor High club roller hockey team defeated Edison, 6-2, at the Gretzky Center in Irvine to hold on to first place. Cory Adler started things off with a first-period goal assisted by Calvin Anderson. Chase Kelly added a goal with assists from Brett Anderson and Jared McRae. Brett Anderson scored in the second period with and assist from Calvin Anderson and Newport iced the win with third-period goals by Vincent Mungo and Brett Anderson.

IRVINE - Newport Harbor High's Jeremy Truelove scored two goals, while Robert Rutter, Jason Spenser and Chase Kelly smacked in one shot each. But it wasn't enough for the Newport Harbor club roller hockey team. In a game that featured six lead changes, Harbor was outlasted by Northwood, 7-5, on Dec. 20 at the Wayne Gretzky Hockey Center in Irvine. The fast-paced game seemed to have catered more to Northwood as it used three players to gain goals.

IRVINE - The Storm Mite Club (10 and under) and the Squirt Club (12 and under) roller hockey teams captured league titles for the second season in a row at the Gretzky Center. The Mites won their semifinal, 9-8, over the Panthers with two goals in the last 58 seconds, then defeated the Red Bulls, 7-3, in the championship game as Ryan Iverson, Mitch Merten, Max McCourt, Joey Arnoni, Blake Kelly, Chad Horn, C.J. Piz, Matt Stohavich, Steven Kassity and goalie A.J. Allen contributed.

The Kings defeated the previously unbeaten Penguins, 3-2, in fourth and fifth grade boys roller hockey action from the Harbor Area Boys and Girls Club. Ryan Iverson's goal with 26 seconds remaining broke the 2-2 tie and gave the Kings the win. The Kings were led offensively by J.P Hogan and Nyko Gonzalez, while Bernie Tanner and Elizabeth and Nick Mamey anchored the defense. In first, second and third grade action: Kings 3, Red Wings 2 - Eric Sansam and Devon Gonzalez each scored for the Red Wings, but the team fell one goal short.

The Newport Harbor roller hockey team has advanced to the Interscholastic Hockey Federation JV-A championship game with a 10-7 victory over Laguna Hills. The Sailors, seeded No. 1, will face No. 3 seed Los Alamitos in the finals 8 p.m. Tuesday at the California Hockey Center in Irvine. Newport Harbor took control early as sophomore Cameron Monahan scored three times in the first period. Rory Campbell added three goals and Preston Kelly had two as the Sailors took an 8-3 lead after two periods.

NEWPORT BEACH - The Sharks ended their season with a thrilling 2-1 victory over the Canadiens in the fourth-grade division of the Boys & Girls Club of the Harbor Area roller hockey league. Canon Call scored the game-winning goal with 14 seconds remaining to cap a turnaround from a 1-0 deficit. Coach Colby Newett's Sharks, who finished second in the league standings, scored both their goals in the fourth quarter. The Canadiens took the lead in the second quarter, but Scotty Pantoskey's goal tied the game in the fourth.

A Mormon church counselor and videographer for local children’s events has been accused of molesting a boy, according to a lawsuit filed in Orange County Superior Court. In a civil complaint filed in February and amended from a previous one in April, a man referred to as John Doe claims Todd C. Summers, 37, of Costa Mesa, molested him when he was between 12 and 18 years old and attended the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Newport Beach. Starting in 1990, the lawsuit claims Summers befriended the boy and his parents while he was the boy’s roller hockey coach.

GIRLS’ WATER POLO Costa Mesa 10, Sage Hill 3 CORONA DEL MAR — Juniors Briana Williams and Ashley Rendon scored three goals apiece for the visiting Mustangs in the Orange Coast League game played Saturday at Corona del Mar High. Sophomore goalkeeper Danielle Bowen had five saves and three assists, while sophomore Hannah Speer had three steals, one assist and help Sage’s primary two-meter player scoreless with her strong defense. Junior Dylan Conroy scored three goals, while junior goalie Jordan Smith-Newman had six saves for the Lightning.

What kind of pastime is this? “It’s like a really violent Rotary Club,” says OC Roller Girl KelKat. The OC Roller Girls are a roller derby league — a resuscitation of the dramatized sport that was popular in the ’70s. Take away the staged story lines, and you’ve got a group of ladies who literally kick butt. A flat-track roller derby starts with a pack of four roller skaters from each team as well as a speed skater or “jammer” who starts behind the pack.

IRVINE — Cameron Monahan and Brett Olinger had two goals and two assists each to lead the Newport Harbor High junior varsity roller hockey team to the Interscholastic Hockey Federation championship with a 7-4 win over Laguna Hills at the 949 Roller Hockey Center in Irvine Wednesday. With the victory, Newport Harbor exacted revenge. Last month, the Sailors lost to Laguna Hills, 7-4. Ryan Iverson added one goal and three assists for the Sailors (16-2-1). Newport Harbor broke away from a 3-3 tie after the first period.

IRVINE — Newport Harbor High's Cameron Monahan was the league's leading scorer last year, so at first glance it might not make sense to see him between the pipes. Actually, goalie was his first position and it remains a favorite, even after eight years in roller hockey. So he was happy to comply on Wednesday night. Monahan stopped seven shots and the Sailors beat rival Corona del Mar, 7-1, at the Irvine Roller Hockey Center in an Interscholastic Hockey Federation JV-A game.

IRVINE ? The Newport Harbor High roller hockey team closed out its season with a 7-4 loss to Los Alamitos in the Interscholastic Hockey Federation JV-A finals Tuesday night at the California Hockey Center. But the team hardly walked away empty handed. Team members finished their nine-month season with some sort of satisfaction, especially seniors Rory Campbell, Sarah Taylor and goalie Colin Meatzie, who knew they at least made it to May. Coach Jim Irwin said his team wasn't the most talented around at the beginning of the season.

Natalie Venegas Costa Mesa resident Timothy Francis has taken part in countless roller hockey tournaments in his seven years of playing. The one he was recently selected to take part in, however, is slightly different. Francis, 11, who plays at the goalie position, is one of 11 players in his age group who will represent California and compete against teams from throughout the country in the inaugural State Wars national roller hockey tournament in Chicago, beginning Aug. 5. While practicing at a rink in Irvine, Francis noticed an advertisement for the State Wars tournament and decided to try out at the Anaheim Hockey Club.

Bryce Alderton Trips to China and Thailand in the summer of 2001 got Bim Barry thinking, "What would it be like to live in another part of the world?" Nearly three years later, the former Newport Harbor High boys cross country and track and field coach can answer that question. Barry, who guided Newport to its only state title in boys cross country in 1992 and spent 12 years coaching at the school -- his last coming in 2002 -- will conclude his second year as athletic and activities director at Collegio Franklin Delano Roosevelt, a K-12 school in Lima, Peru's capital, this spring.

Jeff Carlyle scored three goals against the Red Wings in a 7-2 victory by the Ducks in a Boys & Girls Club of the Harbor Area fourth-grade roller hockey game. Kellon Truxton sent a backhand in for the winning goal in the final quarter and Brady Morgan capped the Ducks' scoring. Kaz Patelski began the scoring with a slap shot from his defensive position. The Ducks received solid defensive efforts from Morgan Williams and Quest Truxton. Goalkeepers Tory Morgan and Kellon Truxton kept the game close.
