COSTA MESA - Orange Coast College's women's basketball team continued its winning way with a 73-47 victory over Rio Hondo at home, on Saturday. Shauna Steward led the Pirates (11-1) with 16 points, and also had four assists. Karyn Fierst scored 14, and Erin Tomlinson and Kristen Urban each scored 11 points. COSTA MESA - The Orange Coast College softball team swept in a nonconference doubleheader over visiting Rio Hondo Saturday. Coach Jim Bollinger's Pirates (6-2) overcame a 4-0 first-inning deficit to rally for a 7-6 victory to open the day. Freshman pitcher Charlotte Kraft earned her third win of the season. OCC then scored 12 runs in the first three innings and held off Rio Hondo (3-4) for a 13-10 win. Freshman pitcher Mijanou Pham recorded her third win of the season, as freshman Emilee Bodiford ripped two doubles and Pham belted a triple.

WHITTIER - Orange Coast College overcame a first-half surge by host Rio Hondo to pull out a 14-6 win Thursday in nonconference men's water polo action. After the two teams fought to a 5-5 tie at the half, the Pirates (10-3) outscored Rio Hondo, 9-1, in the second half for the win. Jeff Pratt and Kevin Becker each scored three times, while Steve Dugger and Scott Butler added two goals apiece for the Pirates, who will participate in the Citrus Tournament this weekend.

COSTA MESA ? The Orange Coast College women's basketball team set a school record for points in a game in a dominating 127-59 win over Rio Hondo in the OCC New Year's Crossover on Saturday. OCC's 127 points breaks the previous-best school record of 116 set in 1992. It also ties the OCC men's basketball record. Devin Hundley scored a team-high 24 points, including six three-pointers, for the Pirates (14-3), while Courtney Ford added 21 and Robin Smith contributed 20. Katie Kissee scored 18 points ?

WHITTIER -- The Orange Coast College men's soccer team started its season with a 2-0 loss to nonconference host Rio Hondo Thursday. The Pirates played strong defensively, OCC Coach Laird Hayes said, as Rio Hondo fired off only six shots. However, the Pirates had just four shots on goal. OCC freshman goalkeeper Josh Cotsenmoyer recorded five saves, including a stop on a penalty kick in the second half. Rio Hondo (1-1) scored with 30 seconds remaining in the first half, and, "took the wind out of our sails," Hayes said.

CYPRESS - Orange Coast College's mens water polo team went 2-2 at the Cypress Invitational, good enough for first place in its division. On Saturday, the Pirates defeated Rio Hondo, 9-5, to advance to the championship bracket. There, they lost to Golden West, 7-5, despite an outstanding defensive effort by OCC. COSTA MESA - Orange Coast College women's water polo readies for this weekend's play at the Citrus Tournament, and if nonconference ventures against Rio Hondo and Palomar are any indication, it may be a very productive weekend. The Pirates are still basking in the recent twin victories, highlighted by goalie Erin Kennedy's work in the net at Palomar on Tuesday when the Newport Harbor High product recorded a pair of four-meter rejections. "Two in one game is really noteworthy," said OCC Coach Mike Giles.

WHITTIER - The Orange Coast College men's basketball team has won four overtime games to forge its best start in recent memory. But, with two seconds left against nonconference host Rio Hondo Tuesday, OCC freshman Ryan Earl decided to save the Pirates any extra work. Earl, fouled while attempting a 15-foot jumper, hit one of two free throws to provide the difference in a 70-69 Pirates victory. The win, the fifth straight for first-year coach Mark Hill's squad, ups the Pirates record to 9-3.
