Barry Faulkner NEWPORT BEACH - Corona del Mar High football coach Dick Freeman's scouting report on Pomona, which the Sea Kings host Friday at 7 p.m. at Newport Harbor High, was both concise and foreboding. The Red Devils (1-0) are huge up front, have speed at the skill positions, and boast at least one blue-chip recruit who combines both attributes. It could be a devilish combination to overcome, but the Sea Kings, ranked No. 8 in CIF Southern Section Division IX, are at least looking to improve upon their play in a 28-7 season-opening loss to Marina.

The Red Devils scored three second-half goals to defeat the Breakers, 3-1, in an AYSO Region 57 girls under-12 soccer game Sept. 20. Codi Clausen, Riley Lazar and Kate Alvarado all scored for the Devils with Hannah Palmaer adding two assists. Clausen's goal was her first. Emily Baker, Korinne Kornmann, Taya Winkle and Taylor Kawakami anchored a strong defense with Brooke Braga, Molly Larkins, Lindsey Peters and Eleanor Strom providing midfield support.

The Red Devils, a boys under-12 team from AYSO Region 57, went unbeaten in the Area Q tournament and advanced to the Southern California Championships. The Devils tied Tustin, 2-2, and followed that with three shutouts over South Irvine (4-0), Newport Beach (3-0) and the Corona del Mar Baboons (1-0). In the championship game, the Devils edged North Irvine, 2-1. The Devils' defense allowed only three goals in five games and was led by Trevor Gladych, Max Rollins, Jonathan Gormley and Spenser Singh.

Steve Virgen POMONA - Maybe Pomona High's Odell Howard provided a 56-40 CIF Southern Section Division III-A first-round victory over the visiting Costa Mesa boys basketball team Friday. But the Mustangs' shooting helped the Red Devils, as well. Costa Mesa (18-10) shot 16 of 54 from the field, including 3 of 19 from beyond the three-point arc. The Mustangs did not hit a three-pointer until Danny Krikorian nailed one trey with 2:30 left. Before then, Costa Mesa was 0 of 15 from three-point shooting.

Tony Altobelli NEWPORT BEACH - Frustration was the word of the night Friday, following Corona del Mar's 18-0 nonleague football loss to Pomona at Newport Harbor High. "I don't know what to say after a game like this," Sea Kings Coach Dick Freeman said. "We were very inconsistent on offense all night. We tried to make adjustments, but you can't when you only do the right thing part of the time." With only 121 yards of total offense and four first downs, Corona del Mar (0-2)

The Blue Devils, an AYSO Region 57 boys under 12 team, shut out the Silver Baboons, 4-0, Monday. Goals were scored by Luke Griner, Peter Frankuchen, Tyler Ellis and Bryce Brunham with strong midfield play from Paul Bioche, Omeed Alipour, Andrew Gartner, Parker Rhodes, Christopher Wheeler and David Grant. In goal, Geoffrey Grant played well to preserve the shutout. In other boys under 12 action: Red Devils 2, Wedge 0 - Peter Broekelschen and Taylor Henderson each scored goals for the Red Devils, while Jonathan Gormley, Trevor Gladych, Alex Neff, Max Rollins and Spenser Singh anchored the defense.

Mitchell Williams scored two goals to lead the Orange Revenge to a 3-2 win over the White Tigers Saturday in AYSO Region 57 Division 4 boys action. Scotty Smith added an insurance goal for the Revenge, while Andrew Mason, Jared Rivera-Ashley, Greg Sanford and Dustin Carpenter controlled the midfield. The Revenge's defense was anchored by Matt Langel, Carson Carpenter, Ryan Kent and Charlie Long. Kyle Tomlin and Steve Hillgren each scored goals for the White Tigers, while Cole Shepard, Robbie Orgorek and Matt Moore each played well on both sides of the ball.

The Chick Magnets defeated the Blue Devils, 3-0, in AYSO Region 57 boys under 12 action Saturday. Patrick Suozzi scored all three goals on assists by Taylor Otto, Austin Harms and Colton Dillion. Daniel Kernan and Geoff Machin also sparked the Chick Magnets' offense with crisp passes. On defense, Magnets' goalkeeper Nick Taylor delivered a shutout with numerous saves. He was helped on defense by the strong play of Michael Page, Taylor Stone, Tom Hutchinson and Jeremy Hyter.

The Red Raiders used a late goal from Nick Freeman to defeat the Funky Monkeys, 3-2, Saturday in AYSO Region 57 boys under 12 action. Andy Rovzar scored two goals to spark the Red Raiders early in the contest. Rovzar's goals were set up by strong passing from Stuart Hagestad and Grant Heffernan. After the Monkeys tied the game, the Raiders regained the lead on Freeman's goal. Jack Lansford stopped numerous shots in goal for the Raiders, while Francis Krahe, Ryan Hultman, Russell Goldberg and Casey Adamczyc anchored the defense.

AYSO Region 97 Girls under 12 (APP) Newport Breakers 1, Lake Forest 0: Kelsey Long scored on an assist from Madison Mastera. Sarah Daly, Paige Tennison, Hannah Nance and Brinley Siemonsma also had shots for Newport, and midfielders Taury Hlinka, Katherine Maddox, Kirsten Rohan and Madison Mastera allowed Newport to control the game. Defensive players Hannah Roman, Mollie Friend and Alexandra Steiner teamed with goalies Layne More and Kirsten Rohan on the shutout.

NEWPORT BEACH - The Red Raiders and Blue Devils played to a 2-2 draw on Oct. 9, in AYSO Region 57 boys under 12 soccer action. Peter Fankuchen and Paul Bioche each scored for the Blue Devils to tie the game. For the Red Bombers, Nick Freeman and Andy Rovzar scored goals, while Ford Noe left the game with a broken arm. A strong Blue Devils' defense, led by Geoffrey Grant, Mike Brusic, Omeed Alipour and Andrew Garten, held the Red Raiders back. Parker Rhodes and David Grant used solid ball-handling to spark the Blue Devils' comeback.
