It hasn’t been easy for Newport Coast resident Alexis Bellino to get used to the television film crew that has trailed for the past few months as she eats at upscale restaurants, shops for designer clothes, and tends to her three young children. The 32-year-old, tanned, athletic mom is waiting nervously for her reality show debut as the newest addition to the cast of “The Real Housewives of Orange County.” “You’re going to be put in the public eye, good or bad, and you just have to hope for the best,” Bellino said recently during an interview at a local coffee shop.

The organizer of this year’s Miss Newport Beach and Miss Newport Beach Teen Pageants isn’t sure who will host the event — but she’s positive it won’t be “Real Housewives of Orange County” star Gretchen Rossi. Pageant organizer Caren Lancona this week decided to drop Rossi, who was slated to emcee the April 24 event, after she was overwhelmed with negative phone calls and e-mails about the reality television celebrity. “I made a mistake, and now I’m just trying to fix it,” Lancona said.

“The Real Housewives of Orange County” hopefuls lined up at South Coast Plaza on Thursday night for an open casting call for the show. “We really look for women and their families that are ready and willing to be open to the show,” said Kathleen French, executive producer. “People willing to live their lives in front of the cameras — that’s the No. 1 key here.” The reality television show, which debuted in 2006, follows the lives of a group of wealthy, often surgically enhanced women living in Orange County as they shop for designer clothing and jewelry, eat at upscale restaurants and gossip.

Newport Beach resident Kirsten Prosser doesn’t like to compare her new show on Danish television to the “Real Housewives of Orange County,” although she has the bronze skin and bling to go toe-to-toe with the blond, Botoxed women of that show. “It’s more like a documentary,” Prosser said. Her glamorous life as a fashion stylist in sunny Orange County is so foreign to people in her native Denmark, there’s no need for the contrived drama or cat fights of American reality television, she said.

When it comes to casting the hit reality television series “The Real Housewives of Orange County,” producers of the show say personality matters more than a bank account balance or bra size. “What we’re looking for is an open personality,” said Housewives Executive Producer Kathleen French. “We’re looking for people who don’t hold back, people who talk openly and who will live their lives openly as if there isn’t a camera in their living room.

I think the majority of my fellow Orange Countians would be shocked to learn that there was recently, however briefly, a debate in print as to whether Orange County ought to unify into a single, consolidated city-county. They would be surprised, at least, at the notion that anything so very grand ought to become of their quiet, stolid little community, and also because nearly none of them would ever care to imagine as much. And hence, I think, the brevity and obscurity of the debate: It did not have popular traction enough to sustain any attention with our laudably public-minded local media.

Southern California buzzed in the afterglow of the royal visit by the duke and duchess of Cambridge, William and his captivating bride, Catherine. Their first visit to the United States as a couple was short but, oh-so-sweet. Three days of parties, polo and purpose. Unfortunately, they didn't have time for Disneyland, the Newport oceanfront beaches or a stroll through Fashion Island or South Coast Plaza, but they left an impression that will resonate with the great citizens of Orange County.

It is done. You made it. I am so proud of you. Another round of holiday-induced rapture has come to a close. Was everything picture-perfect? I knew it would be. And now it is time to move on, start over and get on with it with a new year, a new day, a new lease on life. It isn't really, of course, but pretending that Jan. 1 is more important than May 12 or Oct. 9 makes us feel good, no? It's like New Year's resolutions. For some reason, we believe that we will lose weight, get organized and be so healthy it's sickening because it's January, but we can't do it the rest of the year.
