Barry Faulkner It wasn't long ago that the player Corona del Mar High football coaches call "Herc," short for Hercules, looked more like a jockey than a defensive force. And though senior safety K.C. Barry Faulkner With three two-way senior standouts relegated to the ranks of the walking wounded, a designation that already included eight other players in street clothes, Corona del Mar High's 14-12 nonleague football loss to Cypress Friday at Newport Harbor High becomes less mysterious. But the Sea Kings' second straight defeat, which evened their record at 2-2 heading into Friday's final preleague tuneup against an impressive 3-1 La Habra squad, could not be completely explained away by personnel problems.

Steve Virgen Corona del Mar High Coach Dick Freeman called his football team's fourth-quarter effort the best he's seen in his nine years as the Sea Kings head man. Corona went from rock bottom to sky high in less than 12 minutes, as the Sea Kings scored 21 points in the fourth quarter to defeat nonleague host Troy, 21-12, Friday night at Fullerton High. "We scored 21 points in the fourth quarter this time," Freeman said in reference to the Sea Kings' 34-34 tie last year, when the Warriors scored 21 fourth-quarter points.
