Joseph Boo COSTA MESA - With their red uniforms, Estancia High's baseball team probably looked like the side of a barn to visiting Ranch Alamitos. The Vaqueros proved that their pitchers could hit the side of a barn Saturday in a nonleague doubleheader with the Eagles. But unfortunately for Rancho Alamitos, that was all they could hit. After beaning five hitters in the first game, Rancho Alamitos hit four batters in the second half and walked nine batters, including the winning run, to give Estancia a 7-6 come-from-behind extra-inning victory.

COSTA MESA - Estancia High starting pitcher Casey Gates blanked visiting Rancho Alamitos for three of his five innings, but the Vaqueros wound up with a 15-4 baseball victory Saturday in a Costa Mesa Division consolation game of the Newport Elks Tournament. "Gates pitched really well," said C.K. Green, who assumed head coaching duties Thursday after Doug Deats resigned. Green also praised his team's defensive improvement, which resulted in only one error.

GARDEN GROVE - Amid coaching changes and injuries, some teams might cringe and give up. But not the Corona del Mar High girls softball team. The Sea Kings (11-9, 7-3 in the Pacific Coast League) battled through injuries such as catcher Amy Tyson getting hit in the face with a comebacker in a Pacific Coast League game, and adjusted to a coaching change earlier in league play. They showed the same toughness Wednesday, battling with host Rancho Alamitos (14-11)

GARDEN GROVE - Steven Shores' two-run double to right-center ignited a four-run sixth inning and Costa Mesa High's baseball team pulled out a 6-3 victory over host Rancho Alamitos in a nonleague game Friday. The Mustangs, who were handcuffed, 3-2, entering the sixth, put two runners aboard for Shores as Lyle Yourex walked and Josh Little got aboard on an infield single on a hit and run play. A passed ball moved both runners into scoring position and then Shores came through with his two-bagger.
