The jury trial of a Costa Mesa priest accused of molesting a 7-year-old has been delayed, according to court records. Denis Lyons, 77 of Seal Beach, was set to appear at Santa Ana's Central Justice Center on Monday, but will now appear in court at 9:30 a.m. Thursday. Lyons is charged with four felony counts of lewd acts on a child under the age of 14, court records show. He is accused of molesting a boy in the church rectory and sacristy at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Costa Mesa, according to archived reports from the Costa Mesa Police Department and Orange County district attorney's office.

A former Costa Mesa priest pleaded guilty Friday to four counts of lewd acts with a minor, according to authorities. Denis Lyons, 78, entered his plea in a Santa Ana courtroom as part of a deal brokered with the Orange County district attorney's office. Lyons was a priest with the Roman Catholic Diocese of Orange County when he molested a boy in the rectory and sacristy of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church. Prosecutors said Lyons molested the boy between January 1992 and December 1995, when the boy was 7 to 9 years old. In September 2008, Lyons' victim filed a report with the Costa Mesa Police Department, according to the D.A.'s office, and Lyons was arrested in July 2009 while playing cards at a community center near his Leisure World home in Seal Beach.

The Archdiocese of Los Angeles has agreed to pay nearly $10 million to four men who say they were molested by one of the region's most notorious pedophile priests. The agreement brings to an end four lawsuits against the archdiocese involving Michael Baker, a charismatic parish priest accused of molesting at least 23 boys over three decades. The church has settled numerous cases brought by Baker's victims in the past, but the $9.9-million settlement announced Tuesday is the first settlement since the January release of 12,000 pages of internal archdiocese records about abuse.

A former Costa Mesa priest was sentenced Friday to one year in jail and five years formal probation for committing lewd acts on a child younger than 14 while he served at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, according to prosecutors. Denis Lyons, 78, previously pleaded guilty in March to four felony counts of lewd acts on a child younger than 14 between 1992 and 1995 while he served as a priest at the church, the Orange County district attorney's office said. Lyons molested the boy for three years when the child, a student at the church's school, was between 7 and 9 years old, prosecutors said.

Lolita Harper COSTA MESA -- A priest was put on administrative leave after allegations surfaced that he molested a boy from a former church more than 20 years ago, officials said. Father Jerome Henson was removed from his active role as priest at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church at 1015 Baker St. after officials at the Diocese of Orange County learned of alleged sexual misconduct with a 13-year-old in 1981. Maria Schinderle, the director of human resources at the Diocese of Orange County, said the charges have not been proven and Henson was placed on leave in November according to Diocesan policy.

Deepa Bharath A 69-year-old Catholic priest who served as pastor at St. John the Baptist church for 18 years was arrested Friday on suspicion of molesting a local teenager 25 years ago, officials said. Costa Mesa Police officers arrested Denis Lyons at his Leisure World home in Seal Beach, Sgt. Bob Sizek said. Lyons was pastor of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church on Baker Street between October 1978 and January 1996. The Orange County district attorney's office charged Lyons, who retired from the diocese last year, with one count of performing a lewd and lascivious act against a child below 16 and four counts of oral copulation.

At 85, Pope Benedict XVI is the first to resign the papacy in centuries, citing his age and health concerns. But a relatively young Orange County bishop Benedict appointed just months ago may carry on his influence in the diocese for years to come. "He's younger than I am," the Rev. Enrique Sera of Costa Mesa's St. Joachim Catholic Church said about Bishop Kevin W. Vann, 61. Benedict chose Vann to lead the Orange County Diocese in September. Vann was welcomed in a ceremony at UC Irvine about two months ago. Sera, who said he comforted parishioners Tuesday morning, the day after Benedict announced his retirement, had similarly glowing words for the pope and the bishop.
