COSTA MESA - Opening day won't just be any other day of scrimmage games for the Costa Mesa Pop Warner football league Saturday. The Pop Warner league will have a silent auction and a big-time hamburger lunch at Costa Mesa High. The scrimmage games will start at 9 a.m. at Costa Mesa High, where the flag football team will play and the Mighty Mite division will follow at 11 a.m. The Junior Pee Wee black and green squads will take to the field at 12:30 p.m. and the Pee Wee, Junior Midget and Midget teams will round out the action.

NEWPORT BEACH - The Costa Mesa High football team will have a "Pop Warner Football" night at halftime of Friday night's contest between the Mustangs and Centennial High (Canada), held at Newport Harbor High. Players from all the Costa Mesa Pop Warner teams, as well as the cheerleaders will be introduced during the halftime presentation. Following the introductions, the cheerleaders will present a cheer to the audience. All football and cheer participants will receive free admission.

COSTA MESA - The Costa Mesa Pop Warner Mighty Mite Mustangs won its first game of the season with a 34-0 shutout over the Santa Ana Redskins on Saturday. Brandon Hemenover scored two long touchdowns, while Bobby Lenke had three extra points and a 40-yard touchdown run of his own. Jesse Dawson scored a touchdown on an 18-yard pass from Omar Luna, while Mike Kelli and Mark Contreras each scored as well. In other Pop Warner football action: Costa Mesa Pee Wee 19, Cypress 18 - Gave Trowley's late interception helped spark the win for the Costa Mesa squad.

Players run onto the field during opening day festivities for Costa Mesa Pop Warner Football at Jim Scott Stadium on Saturday. "You can't stand there," the woman said as I tried to set up a shot of football players bursting from a tunnel on to the field at Jim Scott Stadium. OK, I'll try over here. "You can't stand there either," someone else said. OK, how about here? Bad light, bad angle but no objections. And just as the kids start out of the tunnel, the fog machine kicks in to create this weird, backlit, mysterious-looking picture.

An Orange County firefighter violated department policy when he took his crewmen with him to watch his son's Pop Warner football game in Costa Mesa while on duty earlier this month, department officials said Friday. "You will occasionally see firefighters at football games and other community events and cheering the community on," said Orange County Fire Authority Battalion Chief Kris Concepcion. "But in this particular situation, which is an anomaly, this situation was outside of the policy.

The Costa Mesa Pop Warner Junior Pee Wee Mustangs opened the season with a convincing 19-0 win over North Long Beach Saturday afternoon. Quarterback Andrew Millian led and offensive attack, while Joshua Erno scored two touchdowns. Matt Viles had a fumble recovery for a touchdown, while Brian Simerak, Vince and Joseph Galvez, Coleman Brown, Jim Swanteuch and Roland Wood led the defensive attack. In other Pop Warner football action: Pee Wee Mustangs 6, San Clemente 0 - The Mustangs rushed for 250 yards en route to the win. Cody Fairfield scored the game's lone touchdown and had 93 yards rushing on 10 carries.

Down by five points with no timeouts and 91 yards away from the end zone? No problem for the Costa Mesa Mighty Mite Mustangs, who pulled off a miracle 18-17 win over Tustin in Pop Warner football action. Trailing 17-12 late in the game, Tustin fumbled the ball on Costa Mesa's 9-yard-line. With 19 seconds left and no timeouts, Mark Contreras ran a sweep and scampered 91 yards to give the Mustangs the surprise win. Contreras, who also forced two fumbles on defense, finished with 145 yards and two touchdowns on 13 carries.

The Costa Mesa Jr. Pee Wee Black Mustangs remained undefeated with a 34-0 win over the La Habra Silver Lions in Pop Warner Football action last Saturday. Parker Norton scored three touchdowns and Mark Contreras added two more for the Mustangs. Norton and Contreras combined for more than 250 yards of offense. Grant McKee and Graeme Fraser each gained more than 80 yards on three carries. McKee and Tyler Henry, who filled in for the injured Buzzy Yokoyama at fullback, made some crushing blocks and added some strong defense.

FULLERTON - Two Costa Mesa Pop Warner Football cheerleading teams each placed second at a local competition at Fullerton High and have qualified for the Regional Finals in Hawaii. The Jr. PeeWee squad accumulated 266 points and are coached by Marianne Clever and Cheryl Wright. They are Karli Bauermeister, Ariell Benter, Azia Celestino, Rosie Clever, Violet Gross, Carly McBride, Sarah Ohlhaver, Rachel Rogers, Olivia Scheidt, Elizabeth Schifano, Crystalin Simrak, Jessica Swantusch, Jordan Wager and Courtney Wright.

COSTA MESA - The Costa Mesa Pop Warner Football Junior Pee Wee Mustangs defeated the San Clemente Silver Sea Hawks, 35-6, Saturday. With the win, the Mustangs will play La Habra tonight at 6:30 at Estella Park in La Habra in a sudden-death tiebreaker to determine which team advances to the playoffs. Should the Mustangs win today, they would become the first Costa Mesa Junior Pee Wee team to reach the playoffs in 17 years. Quarterback Codi Matthews rushed for a touchdown and connected with wide receiver Damien Scheidt for another TD to pace the Mustangs' offensive attack.
