The top-seeded SOCAL Black 18-and-under girls' team, which features five local players, has advanced to the semifinals of the USA Water Polo Junior Olympics in the Bay Area. SOCAL Black defeated 680 Drivers, 9-2, in a quarterfinal match Saturday. SOCAL, which features recent Corona del Mar High graduates Alex Musselman, Pippa Saunders, Diana Murphy and Victoria Pierotti, as well as Newport Harbor graduate Maddy McLaren, will play second-seeded Santa Barbara in a semifinal match Sunday at 9 a.m. at Stanford University.

The Corona del Mar High girls' water polo team came out on top after another Battle of the Bay classic. The Sea Kings beat Newport Harbor, 5-4, in sudden-death triple overtime to win the Summer Tournament of Champions in Santa Barbara this weekend. Cassidy Papa scored the game-winning goal from six meters out 3 minutes, 45 seconds into sudden-death triple overtime. CdM scored first when Pippa Saunders delivered on a penalty shot. Newport followed with four unanswered goals to take a 4-1 halftime lead.

GIRLS’ WATER POLO Irvine Southern California Championships CORONA DEL MAR — Corona del Mar scored wins over Esperanza, 16-2, and Agoura, 18-0, to open the tournament at its pool Thursday. Pippa Saunders scored four goals in the win over Esperanza, while Leslee Kaczmarek notched six goals in the Sea Kings’ win over Agoura.
