NEWPORT BEACH - Pippa Saunders said it's hard to explain to people who don't play water polo. When they ask how well she's been playing, they're usually asking how many goals she's been scoring. Nevermind that Saunders, who did lead the Corona del Mar High girls' water polo team with 66 goals last year, has changed roles a bit. "It's different," Saunders said. "I take more pride in setting people up, getting that defensive stop, you know? ... It's not as glamorous, but at the end of the day, if we want to win I'm going to do my part.

This time, the Newport Harbor and Corona del Mar High girls' water polo teams won't have to go to Goleta for a quarterfinal meeting. Newport Harbor opens its tournament against Cabrillo at 3 p.m. today at CdM, while the Sea Kings open at their home pool against Esperanza at 5 p.m. Both teams would have another game this evening, win or lose.

The team that's favored to win the Holiday Cup is also the team that had the longest trip to get there. It's a nearly 300-mile round trip for Dos Pueblos of Goleta, but it's worth it for the Chargers. They're the top seed for the annual high school girls' water polo tournament, which begins today at Newport Harbor and Corona del Mar. The Chargers, led by Stanford signee Kiley Neushul and ranked No. 1 in CIF Southern Section Division I, are coming off an undefeated season last year.

Carly Christian got to experience winning a CIF Southern Section Division 1 title a year early. Like many prep water polo players, Christian thought that her senior year would be her best shot at the title. But she helped the upstart Newport Harbor High girls' water polo team win CIF last February as a junior, coming from behind for a thrilling 8-7 victory over rival Corona del Mar. The trip through the season was thrilling for Newport Harbor, which had lost three of four previous meetings to CdM and had started the year ranked just No. 5 in Division 1. "Last year we weren't expecting to win," Christian said.

[Updated: Includes boys' teams scores] CORONA DEL MAR - Corona del Mar High junior Brynne Wong is the one who gets the most swimming publicity in the Wong household, and deservedly so. But her older sister, Natalie, also played a huge role Tuesday in the Battle of the Bay swim meet. Natalie Wong, a senior, was the anchor of the "B" team in the meet-ending 400-yard freestyle relay. CdM Coach Doug Volding needed that "B" relay team to finish third in the event for the Sea Kings to win the meet.

Alex Musselman is a known quantity in girls' water polo. The Corona del Mar High senior goalie, a three-year starter who committed to UCLA last April, was the Newport-Mesa Player of the Year as a junior. Cleo Harrington is the first-year starter for Newport Harbor in the cage. She is a sophomore. In high school sports, that's a word that's sometimes used in front of a name to temper expectations. Not with Harrington, who has established herself alongside Musselman. They are perhaps the top two goalies in the CIF Southern Section.

Both the CdM Aquatics and Newport Water Polo Foundation 18-and-under girls' water polo teams have reasons for optimism headed into the USA Water Polo Junior Olympics. CdM is coming off a title at the California High School State Championships on July 24. Newport will have its best returning player, incoming senior Maddy McLaren, back for JOs. The optimism is good because the local squads typically find the four-day tournament, which begins Thursday at pools around Orange County, a bit challenging.
