Deirdre Newman Gaze into the eyes of the dogs in Blake Schwendimann's photos and you feel as if you can see into their souls. Like in "Harvey in Repose," in which a terrier with Chinese-crested influence, is lounging luxuriously on the rug, looking wistfully toward the camera. This photo and 22 others by Schwendimann will be on display today and Sunday at the Carole Akins Studio in Cannery Village. Dogs and people populate most of his work. But his photos have an air of spontaneity since they are not posed, capturing the raw essence of the subject, Schwendimann said.

Young Chang A gauze bandage on a child's soft skin and the happy face drawn in black ink that smiles out from it. A stethoscope on an untoughened chest -- the feel of cold metal that comes rushing back from days when you, too, were young. When the hospital seemed a scary place to be. The miracle of heart surgery, the everyday-ness of matters involving life and death. Walter Urie saw art in these hospital moments -- in the doctors who wake up every morning to save people's lives, in the children who grow to be adults after fearing they wouldn't.

What would a look back at the last century be without the photographic images that captured it? Well, we wouldn't want you to know that answer, so our Director of Photography, Marc Martin, has put together a scrapbook of images and memories dating back to the 1900s all the way to the present as part of a special Daily Pilot Century in Photos edition. The special edition, starting on Page B1, is a glimpse at all that we used to be and all that we are now, with shots of early Newport Beach and Costa Mesa and unforgettable moments that are etched in time.

Greg Risling NEWPORT BEACH -- Four OCC photography students have won an award from a boat charter company for its advertising campaign. Officials from the Newport Beach-based business, Adventures at Sea, were searching for photos that could be used for its promotional campaign. They approached OCC professor Rick Steadry, who teaches an advanced photography class, to create a possible partnership. "We told the class what our wish was and to see if they could capture that," said Kathy Leek, the company's spokeswoman.
