One small white puppy at a Newport Beach pet store went for more than a routine walk around the block Tuesday night. The four-month-old poodle and schnauzer mix, called a schnoodle, got a real change of scenery when it was stolen from Russo's pet store in Fashion Island by a man who ran away with the dog. The puppy was returned safely after a pet store employee and a bystander chased the man and got the dog back. The puppy was not harmed and is doing fine, said Dion Brown, a Russo's store manager.

This purebred Akita male puppy, now 4 months old, bit a 14-year-old boy after it was purchased from a pet store, said DiAnna Pfaff-Martin, founder of the Community Animal Network. "It is unknown if the boy provoked the dog," she said. "This unfortunate situation has branded the dog as a biter, and it will limit its opportunities to find a good home. The puppy should be in an adult home and have professional training." The dog will be shown this weekend at Russo's pet store at Fashion Island between noon and 4 p.m. See other animals at o7 www.animalnetwork.

Kittens Newborn kittens found in bushes and abandoned boxes need adopting, said DiAnna Pfaff-Martin, founder of the Newport Beach-based Community Animal Network. "Most shelters euthanize the pregnant momma cats and bottle-feeders because of the time and money needed to keep them all," Pfaff-Martin said. Kittens are a lot of work for volunteers and new foster parents, she said. Justice Flenniken, 4, rescued two hungry kittens from a box left outside a pet store when store personnel refused to take them, Pfaff-Martin said.

SUNSHINE Last Sunday's storm broke to bring sunshine into Sparky's life when she was rescued and renamed "Sunshine." A veterinarian at All Creatures Care Cottage in Costa Mesa examined the tiny, eight-pound dog, who had pus oozing from her bleeding paws and scabs on her ears, and he believes her to be a spayed female rat terrier about a year-and-a-half old. The doctor thinks the scabs on the ears are from fly...

At my kid's recent preschool graduation, she climbed on a box, accepted a ribbon-wrapped diploma and fielded a hard question from her pre-K teacher: "What do you want to be when you grow up?" "Pet store owner," she replied. After the ceremony, I told her that it was OK with me if she owned a pet store, as long as it's Petco. She's 5 and, as usual, she had no idea what I was talking about. Good age, as they say. I want to support my kid's dreams. But I also want her to earn enough money to support me, just in case this newspaper thing goes the way of the newspaper.

HUNTINGTON BEACH - With a snip of some giant novelty scissors - and the assistance of some real ones to get the ribbon cut - Newport Beach city officials celebrated their partnership with the Orange County Humane Society on Saturday, the new destination for stray animals found in the city. Newport Beach's animal control officers previously sent found animals to the Dover Shores Pet Care Center in Costa Mesa, but when the company raised its prices this year, Newport Beach signed up with the Huntington Beach animal shelter.

Puppies playing in a furry pile under contemporary baubled chandeliers, oversized pillows in trendy grays and blues, scented products for not-so-pleasant pet situations, faux punk rock outfits for the canine members of your family — the newest shop to open in Corona del Mar is not like any pet store you've seen before. "We tried to make it not like the average pet store," said Brooke Bradford, one of three owners of I Heart Puppies at 2801 E. Coast Hwy. "When you come in, we wanted it to be a chic, nice space.

Community Animal Network's beautiful silver tabby, J.D., has some very lovable qualities. However, his most striking feature is his "sea foam" green eyes. Our young rescue cat is named after the 1960s country singer Jimmy Dean. He was best known for his hit song, "Big Bad John" in 1961, and for hosting the musical variety "Jimmy Dean Show," which first showcased the Muppet Rowlf. Call (949) 759-3646, or visit http://www.animalnetwork.org. For your information: Our adoption event, sponsored by Russo's Pet Experience, will be moving with the pet store to a larger location at Fashion Island in late June.

K athy Jones hasn’t spent much of her life away from pets. The Dana Point resident, who took over two years ago as manager of the Muttropolis boutique at Fashion Island, splits her time between doting on her animals at home and providing toys, clothes and other items to pet owners around Orange County. This Saturday, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., Muttropolis plans to celebrate Valentine’s Day by setting up a dog-kissing booth where owners can have their canines photographed in style for free.

Clutching the banker box housing Ophelia and her daughter Gertie, Mark Elliott said he felt good about being able to give the girls a second chance at life. His son Toby, 9, was carrying the bag of hay his recently adopted guinea pigs would be eating once they arrived at their new home in Irvine. The Elliotts had just attended an adoption event at Centinela Feed in Costa Mesa, hosted by Orange County Cavy Haven, a Costa Mesa-based organization founded in 2003 that rescues and finds homes for abandoned guinea pigs.
