Steve Friedlander has seen dirt transform into a beautiful golf course — a project risen from nothing to Whistling Straits in Sheboygan, Wis. Now he's ready to see and oversee the same type of progression again. This time in Newport Coast. The Irvine Company has named Friedlander the general manager of golf for Pelican Hill Golf Club, which is set to reopen in the fall. He previously served as general manager and group director of golf at Kohler Co., which included Whistling Straits, the course that opened in 1998.

I would just like to point out, as a former member of the team that obtained the original approval for the Newport Coast local coastal program, that the Pelican Hill Inn is totally in keeping with the local coastal program. That means it is consistent with the general plan for that part of Newport Beach and the request [to build the resort] requires no general plan amendment. Thus, [the issue] the voters were concerned about -- wanting to vote on general plan amendments in order to assess traffic impacts -- is not triggered by this particular proposal.

But when the Irvine Co. recruited him to oversee the kitchen at its planned Resort at Pelican Hill, he still felt awed by the opportunity. Richard Dunn Even though Jack Nicklaus didn't design the two championship courses at Pelican Hill Golf Club, he certainly plays there as if he did. Nicklaus, who turns 61 on Jan. 21, is very particular about where he plays. Aside from the major championships and selected events on the Senior PGA Tour, Nicklaus doesn't play much competitive golf, concentrating on other businesses, including golf-course architecture and development around the world.
