California Amateur champion and Newport Beach resident Don DuBois edged Southern California Golf Association Amateur champion Scott McGihon of Bermuda Dunes by 55 points to capture the inaugural SCGA Player of the Year competition. The award will be presented at the SCGA annual meeting on Nov. 1 in Universal City. DuBois, who finished high in seven events, had 875 total points, while McGihon, in four events, had 820. Recently-crowned SCGA Mid-Amateur champion John McClure of West Los Angeles finished third with 730. The 46-year-old DuBois, a title insurance executive, defeated 17-year-old Joseph Bramlett of Saratoga to win the 94th California Amateur championship at Pebble Beach last June.

Don DuBois, a Big Canyon Country Club member and Newport Beach resident, finished tied for 29th with an 8-over-par 296 at the 106th Southern California Golf Association Amateur championship, which concluded Sunday at Tijeras Creek Golf Club in Rancho Santa Margarita. Dubois shot 2-over-par 74 in all four rounds. DuBois, who claimed the 94th California Amateur championship at Pebble Beach Golf Links June 25, had 10 birdies and 47 pars, along with 12 bogeys and three double bogeys for 72 holes of competition.

U.S. OPEN QUALIFYING The annual rite of local qualifying for the U.S. Open is here and a slew of area residents will be vying for a spot in this year's tournament at Winged Foot Golf Club in New York. The largest contingent will be at Newport Beach Country Club on Wednesday. The field includes Newport Coast's Amit Chopra, Costa Mesa Golf & Country Club tournament director Sean Collins and Newport Beach Country Club champion Brian Lindley. Corona del Mar High striker Reed Williams has scored on the national stage. The senior was one of a dozen boys' soccer players making the ESPN RISE Winter All-American team after leading the Sea Kings to their first CIF Southern Section Division IV and CIF Southern California Regional Division II titles. The UCLA-bound Williams totaled 32 goals and 12 assists. The Sea Kings finished 27-1-1 and ranked No. 2 in the country by ESPN RISE. Other laurels Williams has received are the Gatorade California Boys' Soccer Player of the Year and the CIF Southern Section Division IV Offensive Player of the Year.

Former UC Irvine men's golfer Kenny Kim begins play today at the 110th U.S. Open at Pebble Beach Golf Links. Kim, who played on two Big West Conference championship teams at UCI, is scheduled to tee off today at 2:42 p.m. on the first hole. His tee time is 9:12 a.m. Friday on the 10th hole. Kim qualified for the U.S. Open by shooting six-under 136 over 36 holes to tie for second at the June 7 qualifier at Del Paso Country Club in Sacramento. Kim shot 69 in his first round and 67 in the second.
