Both courses at Pelican Hill Golf Club were recently selected in the top 15 for California's best public-access golf courses by Golfweek Magazine. The listing comes at a time of temporary closure for Pelican Hill, which shut down both courses last week for major renovations. The resort is scheduled to be reopened in late 2007. In Golfweek's listings, the Ocean Course was No. 12 while the Links Course was No. 14. Pebble Beach Golf Links was listed No. 1 in California and No. 2 in the nation for resort courses.

Newport Beach resident Don DuBois shot a 6-over-par 222 in the first three rounds of the 106th SCGA amateur championship Friday and Saturday at Tijeras Creek Golf Course to advance to Sunday's final round. DuBois, who is a member at Big Canyon Country Club, shot 2-over-par 74s in all three rounds and is tied for 32rd on the leaderboard. Through 54 holes, DuBois, who won the 94th California amateur championship at Pebble Beach Golf Links June 25, registered nine birdies and 33 pars.

Don DuBois, the Newport Beach resident who won the 94th California amateur championship at Pebble Beach Golf Links June 25, is one of the favorites in the 106th Southern California Golf Association amateur championship at Tijeras Creek Golf Course starting Friday. It will be the fourth time the SCGA championship will be held in Orange County. The last one was in 1995 at Santa Ana Country Club. The 72-hole stroke play event will include 36 holes on the first day. The original field of 84 golfers will be cut to the low 42 scorers and ties for 18 holes Saturday and Sunday.

SALT-ING AWAY THE MONEY Costa Mesa native Bryan Saltus scored the biggest payday of his professional career over the weekend when he finished second at the Asian Tour's GS Caltex Maekyung Open. Saltus carded a 16-under-par 272 at Lakeside Country Club in Seoul, South Korea, to finish one shot behind Suk Jong-ryul. The Newport Harbor High graduate took home $78,125 for his performance, which included a chip-in birdie on the 11th hole during the final round. "It's a nice feeling," Saltus told reporters afterward.

IRVINE - Deuces are wild for Paul Smolinski at UC Irvine. The men's golf coach led the Anteaters to a second consecutive Big West Conference title and was rewarded with winning the Big West Conference Coach of the Year honors for the second year in a row. And the awards for the Anteater golf team don't stop there. Junior Mike Lavery and Jeff Coburn were both named first-team All-Big West, while junior Ryan Armstrong was named to the second team. Lavery shot par 72 Saturday in the NCAA West Regional at the University of New Mexico championship course in Albuquerque to finish with a three-round total 221, good for 34th, while Coburn shot 233 for three rounds to finish 51st.
