Jeff Coburn and Mike Lavery, who recently completed their senior seasons at UC Irvine, were defeated in match-play competition Wednesday at the California State Amateur Championship in Pebble Beach. Coburn was defeated 2-up by Greg Uberuaga from San Diego, while Lavery lost 2 and 1 to Buzz Peel from Delray Beach, Fla., at the Pebble Beach Golf Links. Coburn was second after 36 holes of stroke play in the tournament. He shot a 2-under-par 70 at Spyglass Hill Golf Course Tuesday after opening with a 75 at Pebble Beach Golf Links Monday.

PEBBLE BEACH ? UC Irvine golfer Brian Edick, buoyed by an opening-round score of six-under-par 66 on Monday, has advanced to match play at the 95th California Amateur Championship after finishing in sixth place over 54 holes of stroke play. Edick, who is slated be a senior for the Anteaters next season, shot a four-over-par 76 on Wednesday at Pebble Beach Golf Links to finish with a three-round total of even-par 216 (66-74-76). The top 32 scorers following Wednesday's round begin match play Thursday.

Both courses at Pelican Hill Golf Club were recently selected in the top 15 for California's best public-access golf courses by Golfweek Magazine. The listing comes at a time of temporary closure for Pelican Hill, which shut down both courses last week for major renovations. The resort is scheduled to be reopened in late 2007. In Golfweek's listings, the Ocean Course was No. 12 while the Links Course was No. 14. Pebble Beach Golf Links was listed No. 1 in California and No. 2 in the nation for resort courses.

IRVINE - Deuces are wild for Paul Smolinski at UC Irvine. The men's golf coach led the Anteaters to a second consecutive Big West Conference title and was rewarded with winning the Big West Conference Coach of the Year honors for the second year in a row. And the awards for the Anteater golf team don't stop there. Junior Mike Lavery and Jeff Coburn were both named first-team All-Big West, while junior Ryan Armstrong was named to the second team. Lavery shot par 72 Saturday in the NCAA West Regional at the University of New Mexico championship course in Albuquerque to finish with a three-round total 221, good for 34th, while Coburn shot 233 for three rounds to finish 51st.

UC Irvine golfer Brian Edick, who is slated to be a senior next year for the Anteaters, recorded eight birdies and carded a six-under-par 66 in the first round of the 95th California Amateur Championship at Poppy Hills Golf Course on Monday. Edick's fast start gave him a three-stroke lead after 18 holes. He followed that by shooting a 74 during Tuesday's second round and is currently in second place overall with a 36-hole total of four-under-par 140. Edick advanced to the third stroke-play round, which is slated to take place at Pebble Beach Golf Links today.
