Though there are plenty of familiar faces, the 2009 UC Irvine women’s volleyball team, in many ways, is a first edition. And for first-year coach Paula Weishoff and her Anteaters, a storybook finish would include a trip to the NCAA Tournament. UCI’s postseason bubble burst last season, when Coach Charlie Brande’s ninth and final season at the helm ended with a 17-12 record and a tournament snub. This, despite a second-place finish in the Big West Conference.

"It feels pretty amazing," Perrine said over the phone during a break while coaching at UCI volleyball camps at the Bren Events Center. IRVINE — How do you formulate a post-match address to your team when flat-lining would be an improvement? UC Irvine women's volleyball coach Paula Weishoff, who said she will surely fail to sleep after a 25-10, 25-11, 25-15 Big West Conference drubbing by visiting Long Beach State Tuesday at the Bren Events Center, in which the last-place Anteaters posted a negative hitting percentage, may find the words yet. Paula Weishoff is taking on double duty again this season, not only coaching the UC Irvine women's volleyball team, but also serving as the program's tour guide back to relevance. After a 22-8 campaign in her first season at the Anteaters' helm in 2009, Weishoff's UCI teams are a combined 29-63, including 12-38 in the Big West Conference the last three years. Three straight eighth-place finishes in conference have decreased expectations to the point where being picked to finish fifth in the conference coaches' preseason poll was actually uplifting.

UC Irvine women's volleyball coach Paula Weishoff said she doesn't like to coach effort, though she has come to realize the necessity of managing it. Coaching effort typically refers to the need to generate energy from players, most often on the practice floor. But Weishoff, entering her fourth season, said she has not had to motivate her players in this regard. Instead, she believes that her players' propensity to try too hard has contributed to shortcomings that have produced a combined 18-41 record the last two seasons, including a 7-25 mark in Big West Conference play.

The U.S. women's volleyball team will try to earn the country's first Olympic gold medal in the indoor version of the sport on Saturday, when the top-ranked Americans face No. 2-ranked Brazil in the gold-medal match at 10:30 a.m. (PT) at Earls Court in London. But Team USA assistant coaches Paula Weishoff and Jamie Morrison, the UC Irvine women's head coach and assistant coach, respectively, are quite familiar with success on the Olympic stage. Weishoff, in her first Olympics as an assistant coach, represented the U.S. as a player in the 1984, 1992 and 1996 Olympic Games.

There comes a point with former athletes when the legacy they created during their playing career virtually trumps any resume they may have developed after that career has ended. Karch Kiraly, the Babe Ruth, Michael Jordan and/or Wayne Gretzky of men's volleyball, is such a figure. Kiraly, whose relatively modest coaching experience has been limited to an assistant's role, which he currently holds with the U.S. women's national team, does not rival some of the sideline accomplishments presented by others pursuing the UC Irvine men's volleyball coaching vacancy that was created when John Speraw left for UCLA.

The 2010 season for the UC Irvine women's volleyball team wasn't so much a step backward as it was a free fall. The Anteaters finished 8-22, 3-13 in the Big West Conference, which resulted in an eighth-place finish in the nine-team circuit, and ended a run of three straight winning seasons and three top-three conference finishes. The addition of the University of Hawaii to the Big West Conference, announced Friday and scheduled to begin for the 2012-13 athletic year, should bring a little marquee value to the previously all-California alliance. It will also add some logistical challenges that have already drawn concern from Anteaters coaches. In terms of competitive equity, the Warriors (men's teams) and Rainbow Wahine (women's teams) don't send shivers down the spines of most coaches at UCI, though Anteaters' women's volleyball coach Paula Weishoff's job is now monumentally more difficult.

IRVINE — Swimming against the current of a seriously upgraded schedule, the UC Irvine women's volleyball team continued to sink beneath the surface Tuesday night. But second-year coach Paula Weishoff said she hopes playing better competition will eventually be a weight belt the Anteaters can release and then rise in the Big West Conference standings. In the home opener against No. 23-ranked San Diego, however, UCI players performed as if an anchor was chained to their collective ankles.
