Kevin Bland, the Northern California Community College Player of the Year after averaging 22.3 points and 9.5 rebounds at San Joaquin Delta College in Stockton, has signed a national letter of intent to play men's basketball at UC Irvine. Bland, a 6-foot-8 forward with two years of eligibility remaining, helped lead San Joaquin Delta to the Big 7 Conference title, a berth in the state quarterfinals and a 29-7 record. He scored 37 points, hitting his first 11 field-goal attempts, in a 91-69 win over Shasta in the second round of the Northern California regional playoffs.

Senior point guard Aaron Fitzgerald's 28 points lead UC Irvine to 67-59 win at Cal State Fullerton Saturday. UCI ups Big West win streak to six.FULLERTON -- While host Cal State Fullerton sorely missed junior scoring leader Bobby Brown for the much of the second half Saturday, UC Irvine senior point guard Aaron Fitzgerald simply couldn't miss. Fitzgerald made all five of his field-goal attempts after halftime, including three three-pointers, to help the Anteaters claim a 67-59 men's basketball victory, their sixth straight in Big West Conference play.

The UC Irvine men's basketball team's nonconference schedule next season is highlighted by a home game against two-time defending NIT champion South Carolina on Nov. 14. Coach Pat Douglass' Anteaters will also play host to nonconference foes Pepperdine, Sam Houston State and Harvard before tipping off Big West Conference play on Jan. 4 with a home game against Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. UCI opens the season Nov. 10 against Winston-Salem State in the first of three games at the Basketball Travelers Classic at Fresno State.

Campbell scores 22 and Fitzgerald breaks arena record with 14 assists in 94-40 romp.WINSTON SALEM, N.C. -- The UC Irvine men's basketball team rebounded from Thursday's season-opening loss with a victory for the ages Friday. The Anteaters (1-1) hammered Mississippi Valley State, 94-40, in the consolation game of the 2K Sports College Hoops Classic's Winston Salem Regional at Wake Forest University. It was the biggest win over an NCAA Division I program in UCI history. It was the second largest margin of victory in Anteater annals, topped only by a 91-23 thumping of Division III Pomona-Pitzer on Dec. 7, 2002.

ANAHEIM — The arena was different, as were the basketballs and any fatigue that lingered from the near-1,700-mile flight that came with the Mississippi State men’s basketball team’s first road game this season Thursday in the first round of the inaugural Anaheim Classic. But one change the Bulldogs found to their liking in a 68-53 triumph over UC Irvine at the Anaheim Convention Center was a previously untapped rate of exchange. RIVERSIDE — Nic Campbell's opening statement was as important as his closing argument in the UC Irvine men's basketball team's 66-61 Big West Conference victory at UC Riverside Wednesday night. But for Campbell, one of the Anteaters' two seniors facing what could be their last handful of collegiate games, it's all crunch time now, and every verdict has a consequence. Campbell, who scored the Anteaters' first 11 points on his way to a season-high 19, drained a three-pointer with 33 seconds left to break a 59-59 tie, giving UCI an insurmountable lead, and an important and rare road victory.

NORTHRIDGE — The UC Irvine men's basketball team went from freefall to free-wheeling when it first incurred, then erased an 18-point deficit at Cal State Northridge Thursday night. But the Anteaters, who have yet to win a game on an opponent's floor this season, could not survive a frenetic finish, as the Matadors claimed a 67-61 Big West Conference victory. "We fought back, we just couldn't put the hammer down and finish it," said UCI Coach Pat Douglass, whose team fell to 7-10, 1-2 in the Big West.

Tweener, derived from the word between, isn't usually used as a term of endearment by college basketball coaches. To be labeled as such typically indicates a shortage of prototypical physical prowess, most often delineated by height. In mid-major conferences like the Big West, where the supply and demand of recruiting often forces coaches to make creative choices when doling out scholarships, tweeners are as much the rule as the exception. In rare cases, however, the ability to flow freely between more than one position can create more than consternation for a coach.

IRVINE — Junior guard Brett Lauer is no longer the feel-good, crowd-favorite, sparkplug off the bench for the UC Irvine men’s basketball team. Making his fifth straight start, his eighth in 16 games this season, against visiting Cal Poly San Luis Obispo Saturday, the 6-foot-1 transfer from San Diego Mesa Community College showed he has become a valued and reliable offensive weapon for the Anteaters. Lauer, who tied his career-high with 14 points in Thursday’s home win over UC Santa Barbara, scored 20 to key a 73-69 Big West Conference triumph over the Mustangs, before 1,512 at the Bren Events Center.

IRVINE — Form held Saturday in the Big West Conference men’s basketball game won by host UC Irvine, 67-53, over UC Riverside. But not without the Anteaters having to do some considerable tweaking to their defensive philosophy. UCI Coach Pat Douglass, concerned over a deficiency in perimeter quickness and the Highlanders’ ability to create shots with ball screens, abandoned his traditional man-to-man defense for a one-two-two zone with about five minutes left in the first half.
