Amara Aguilar There is something about being courtside on the floor at a basketball game with all the players that drives coach Pat Douglass. Maybe it's the crowd roaring behind him or the intensity of the action on the court. Maybe it's the strategy involved in leading a team to victory or the interaction a coach has with his players. Maybe it's one of those things. Maybe it's all of them. "Ever since I can remember I wanted to go into coaching," said Douglass, the UC Irvine men's basketball coach.

As this basketball season continues there seems to be one issue that won't go away, and probably never will until UC Irvine basketball coach Pat Douglass does, indeed, go away. The kind of success that the Anteaters' coach has enjoyed over the years, whether in the anonymity of Bakersfield or the Division I circles of the Big West Conference, automatically does that. Most college fans have two fears about their coach: (1) How soon can we dump this dolt, who has dared to lose, badly and often?

Barry Faulkner The stat sheet confirmed UC Irvine Coach Pat Douglass' worst fears Wednesday night, and it also helped explain the final score in a 65-57 nonconference men's basketball loss at Cal. "I knew going in we had to limit their second shots and take care of the basketball," Douglass said. "We felt if we could get into a shooting game with them, maybe we'd have a shot." Instead, the Golden Bears (2-2) dominated on the offensive glass, pulling half of its 28 rebounds after its own missed shots.

IRVINE — Much like their first-year coach, the UC Irvine men's basketball team appeared a little less polished in its exhibition opener Tuesday night than it figures to be down the road. Russ Turner, who took over the Anteaters helm from Pat Douglass after six seasons as an NBA assistant, said a wardrobe malfunction forced him to ditch the tie in his ensemble. He then witnessed some less-than-optimally-aesthetic moments from his new team. But there was also some stylish displays from the Anteaters in a 77-52 triumph over UC San Diego, an NCAA Division II school picked to finish 11th in the California Collegiate Athletic Assn.

Pat Douglass, whose 197 wins and 13 seasons at the helm are the most in the 45-year history of the program, is finished as UC Irvine men’s basketball coach. UCI Athletic Director Mike Izzi announced Thursday that Douglass, who guided the Anteaters to their only Big West Conference regular-season titles in 2001 and 2002, will not have his contract renewed. “I believe this decision is in the best interest of the university,” Izzi said in a statement. “It allows us to move the men’s basketball program in a new direction with the goal of annually being in the upper tier of the Big West Conference as well as competing in the NCAA Tournament.

Pat Douglass openly savored the joy of his UC Irvine men’s basketball team’s improbable comeback victory in overtime at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo Saturday. Douglass, who in his 13th season has the longest tenure and the most victories in program history, hugged assistant Doug Oliver in the postgame locker room and told his players he had never seen anything like their fortuitous rally to claim a berth in the Big West Conference Tournament. But the celebration just may be his last at UCI, as all indications are that his contract will not be renewed.

UCI men's basketball preview storyA combined 27-30 after three 20-win seasons, Anteaters aim to return to Big West elite.Entering his ninth season at UC Irvine and two wins away from 500 as a college men's basketball head coach, Pat Douglass has taken to reflection. But it's not the impending milestone -- compiled over 24 seasons at Eastern Montana, Cal State Bakersfield and UCI -- he has pondered as much as the last two rather unremarkable campaigns. "We shouldn't have dropped off like we did," Douglass said of back-to-back records of 11-17 and 16-13 that followed three straight 20-win seasons, including two Big West Conference regular season titles.
