As summer comes to a close each year, one event on the calendar stands out: Long Point Race Week. Thirty eight boats signed up for this race to Long Point, Catalina, this year and were greeted with perfect weather, good friends and breathtaking scenery. Friday night's party was at Newport Harbor Yacht Club's way station at Moonstone Cove. While sitting in one of the lounge chairs, near the entrance pathway into the station, I was enjoying the sunset and explaining my poor performance as tactician - the person who decided what course to take to the island - to the owner of the boat I sail on. I could not help but overhear the comments of the crew members of different boats as they walked down the pathway.

You can buy a 50-quart stockpot or a larding needle, plus everything in between.

" They paved paradise and put in a parking lot." OK, it's a city hall, not a parking lot; and open space, not paradise. But in Orange County, open space is a feast for the eyes. This park may seem like paradise for the native California flora and fauna that will call it home. When I jog the trails through open space surrounding Turtle Rock in nearby Irvine, killdeer and other birds call out. California quail scurry into the shrubs. Sometimes a roadrunner hops up the path in front of my feet.

While it is difficult to say for certain, it is reasonable to assume that had last month's devastating earthquake and tsunami in South Asia hit in the spring or early summer, Newport-Mesa would have lost some of its sons and daughters. That is time of year when the Indian Ocean draws surfers to a host of spots that vie for the title "paradise." Listen to any group of surfers in the water or on the beach in Newport and you're likely to hear at least one talking about a trip to Indonesia, the Maldives or Sumatra.

For those of you who believed that Newport-Mesa school board member Wendy Leece's recent attempt to keep two books out of the hands of high schoolers was a failed censorship try, for those of you who could only answer her request with name-calling and for those of you whose replies were just plain juvenile and conveniently avoided the substance of the issue, I have some startling information. Two and a half years ago, a teacher at Costa Mesa High School submitted a secondary reading list to the Board of Trustees in the same way a Newport Harbor High School teacher did a few weeks ago, causing Leece to make her objections.

The first paragraph of Pat Welsh’s new book says it all: “Gardening is different in Southern California. Anyone who’s ever gardened elsewhere will tell you that. It’s not like back East ... it’s not like England ... it’s not even like Florida. “Even people who have never gardened anywhere else soon realize how different Southern California gardening is; all you need to do is flip through any book on basic gardening to realize that much of its advice just doesn’t apply here.

Some doomsday prophesiers maintain that Southern California is destined to break off from the mainland during the “Big One,” the future earthquake expected to decimate the state. But half a millennium ago, cartographers thought California was, in fact, an island. An exhibit showing examples of the peculiar geographical error is on view at the Sherman Library & Gardens in Corona del Mar. The show was the idea of library Director William Hendricks. “He’s always been fascinated with that topic,” librarian Jill Thrasher said.
