The UC Irvine men's golf team finished second out of 15 teams in the Northwest Collegiate Classic that concluded Tuesday at Trysting Tree Golf Club in Corvallis, Ore. UC Irvine 68, San Diego State 66 SAN DIEGO — Mikah Maly-Karros had 20 points and a season-best 14 rebonds to lead the Anteaters to their first win of the season in the nonconference game Tuesday. Jade Smith-Williams added 19 points and chipped in a team-best five assists for UCI (1-3). Junior Kassandra McCalister, an Oregon State transfer in her second game as an Anteater, had 14 poitns off the bench in 29 minutes. UCI posted a 47-39 rebounding advantage, overcoming a 22-17 turnover deficit.

As the intern for the Daily Pilot's photo department, I've had the privilege of working with a talented group of people who are always teaching me and encouraging me to take advantage of great photo opportunities in and outside the community. At the start of the fall semester I began working as the photo editor for the USC student newspaper, the Daily Trojan. The photo staff here adamantly told me what a great opportunity I had, especially in terms of sports access.

WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL Varney Invitational MANHATTAN, Kan. - Aly Squires led all players with 20 kills to go along with 13 digs as UC Irvine swept Oakland University, 25-17, 25-22, 27-25, Saturday at Kansas State. Squires boasted a .320 hitting percentage, posting just four errors in 50 attempts. Kristin Winkler had 27 digs. Marissa Alvarez handed out 38 assists to go along with 11 digs, while Shannon Fleming fired four aces. Arielle Manz was errorless on the day, hitting .538 (7-0-13)

Ronald V. Davis, retired chairman of the Perrier Group and founder of Orange Coast College's Guardian Scholars Program, was honored May 30 as OCC's "Outstanding Citizen" of 2003 ... Michael Beitman, 13, of Pegasus Middle School in Newport Beach won Junior Division first place honors in the Electricity and Electronics category competition of the 48th annual Orange County Science & Engineering Fair. Carissa Cummings, 14, of Pegasus Middle School in Newport Beach won Junior Division first place honors in the Behavioral Sciences category competition of the science and engineering fair.

Bryce Alderton Doug Stuckey can finally take a sigh of relief. After a year in which he got married, attended about 10 weddings and moved into a new home in Irvine, the former Newport Harbor High kicker who went on to play at Oregon State University is finally starting to settle in at his new job as a regional marketing consultant for a banking chain. Stuckey, 28, and wife, Molly, celebrated their first wedding anniversary two weeks ago and will welcome their second canine in February.

UC Irvine Athletic Director Mike Izzi told Anteaters' women's basketball coach Molly Goodenbour on Wednesday that her contract would not be renewed, ending her four-year tenure with the program. Goodenbour, a former Final Four MVP at Stanford where she played on NCAA championship teams in 1990 and 1992, was 44-76 at UCI. She guided UCI to a tie for third place in the Big West Conference and the No. 3 seeding in the conference tournament this past season. UCI lost in the quarterfinals to eventual conference tournament champion UC Santa Barbara to finish 13-16.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL Pepperdine 91, UC Irvine 74 MALIBU — Sophomore Mikah Maly-Karros amassed a career-high-tying 28 points and a career-best 14 rebounds to lead the Anteaters in the nonconference road game Tuesday. Maly-Karros, a transfer from Loyola Marymount who was named big West Conference Player of the Week after her first two games and is now averaging 22 points since becoming eligible before the Dec. 15 game at Oregon State, made 10 of 23 field-goal tries and was eight for 10 from the free-throw line.

UC Irvine was awarded the Division I-AAA Athletics Directors Association All-Sports Trophy for 2006-07. The annual award is given to the best all-around sports program in Division I-AAA (schools without football programs). UC Irvine was the top-ranked Division I-AAA school in the U.S. Sports Academy Directors' Cup standings. Coach John Speraw's Anteaters claimed the national championship in men's volleyball. UCI's baseball team also reached the College World Series, losing to eventual national champion Oregon State in its pool.
