South Coast Repertory has hired a new public relations director, the Costa Mesa-based theater company announced last week. Tania Thompson began her new post July 19, according to a news release. Thompson takes over for Soyia Ellison, who left to work for Habitat for Humanity in Georgia. Previously, Thompson was media relations director for the University of Idaho, according to the release. The Oregon native has a bachelor's degree in journalism from the University of Oregon.

Jake Knapp, a recent Estancia High graduate, shot three-over-par 73 in the third round Thursday and is tied for 21st at the 46th Pacific Coast Amateur on the Bandon Dunes Golf Resort Trails Course in Bandon, Ore. Knapp, bound for UCLA, is 12-over-par 224 through three rounds. He enters Friday's final round 11 shots back of the leader, Jarred Bossio of Olympia, Wash. During the second day of the tournament on Wednesday, Knapp and two other golfers teamed to comprise the Southern California Golf Assn.

After 12 years as UC Irvine executive vice chancellor and provost, Michael R. Gottfredson is moving on to the University of Oregon. The much-lauded leader will take over as president there Aug. 1. Gottfredson is credited with helping to establish new schools in law and computer science as well as new programs in statistics and public policy and launching majors in public health and business. At UCI, Gottfredson was responsible for planning and budgeting including managing $90 million in state funding cuts since 2007-2008.

Several Pacific 12 Conference football programs are looking at Corona del Mar High junior standout defensive end Tim Reinhardt, Reinhardt's father, Bill, said in an email on Wednesday. Bill said the schools interested in Reinhardt, a 6-foot-4, 235-pounder, who can also play tight end, are Arizona, Arizona State, Utah, Washington, Washington State, Colorado, USC and Oregon. Other schools following Reinhardt are San Diego State, University of San Diego, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, Colorado State, Fresno State, Nevada and UC Davis, Bill said.

Corona del Mar High senior all-purpose threat Cole Cottrell has been invited to walk on the USC football team, said CdM Coach Scott Meyer. Cottrell, who earned All-CIF Southern Section Southern Division, Daily Pilot Newport-Mesa Dream Team and first-team All-Pacific Coast League honors, played cornerback, wide receiver and returned kickoffs and punts for the Sea Kings. Meyer said Cottrell had opportunities to walk on at two other Pacific 12 Conference schools, Colorado and Oregon.

Everything you need to know about Tatum Norton can be found in the recent decision she made for college. Alabama had offered the Newport Harbor High senior a scholarship to play volleyball for the Crimson Tide. She said it was a three-year scholarship, something rare when it comes to the position Norton plays. Norton is a libero, a defender who must also provide accurate passing. An NCAA Division I scholarship for a libero? It almost seemed too good to be true. Apparently it seemed to be too easy for Norton.

WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL Southern Oregon def. Vanguard SIOUX CITY, Iowa - The Lions fell, 25-22, 25-15, 18-25, 25-23, in the first round of pool play at the NAIA Championship on Tuesday. Senior KaUwila Lavea had 17 kills, while senior Jamie Heenan, a Newport Harbor High product, added 15 for the Lions (21-13). Senior Alexandra Leja had 27 assists and senior Lisa Morgan had 18 digs for Vanguard, which plays Lee of Tennessee (31-2) on Wednesday in the second of three Pool C matches.

ARTHUR EMIL SVENDSEN December 12, 1923-September 29, 2011 Arthur Svendsen was born December 12, 1923 in Portland, Oregon to Emil and Kirsten Svendsen. He attended the University of Oregon where he studied business and history and joined Beta Theta Pi fraternity. He proudly served in the Marine Corps during World War II, serving in the Pacific Arena until the war ended. Upon his return, he attended UCLA and found himself again active in his fraternity. Shortly after graduation, Arthur founded Standard Pacific Homes, where he served as Chairman and CEO for nearly forty years.

Shirley Ann Beck Born April 13, 1930 in Santa Monica, CA, Shirley passed away on July 20, 2011 in Orange County. She spent her childhood in Oregon but moved back to California in the early 50's. She is survived by 5 children, 5 grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great grandchild. She lived in Costa Mesa, CA for over 50 years. Memorial Services are pending. Her ashes will be scattered at sea with her beloved son, former husband, and friends.
