UC Irvine baseball coach Dave Serrano said Wednesday he will not leave the school for a similar job at the University of Oregon. Serrano, named 2007 National Coach of the Year after leading UCI to the College World Series in his third season at the helm, said remaining loyal to UCI was the primary factor in his decision. “I’m staying at UC Irvine,” Serrano said from Las Vegas, where he is vacationing. Serrano said Friday he had agreed to visit the Oregon campus to discuss specifics of the job. But his trip, scheduled for Monday and Tuesday, was postponed by Oregon officials after it was announced Monday that Nike founder Phil Knight was donating $100 million to the school’s athletic department.

IRVINE — UC Irvine still has not beaten Oregon in five men’s basketball meetings between the two programs, the latest an 84-77 nonconference Ducks’ triumph before 4,206 Friday at the Bren Events Center. But Anteater fans can no longer say they have yet to see what all the fuss was about when Kevin Bland was recruited after being named the state community college Co-Player of the Year out of Delta College in Stockton in 2006. Bland, a 6-foot-8 forward, averaged 5.8 points and fouled out 10 times in 34 games as a junior last season.

When you shoot seven-under-par 63 on the first day of a two-day amateur tournament, you're probably going to come out the next day pretty relaxed. When University of Oregon golfer Joey Benedetti performed the feat on Saturday to earn a two-stroke lead at the Costa Mesa Country Club, it made Sunday a lot easier. Benedetti, who will be a junior at Oregon this fall, played steady golf on Sunday on the par-72 Los Lagos course, carding a two-under 70 to post a two-day score of nine-under 133. It was good enough to win the championship flight of the Costa Mesa City Golf Championships.

Miranda Stiver was more than a little bit intimidated when she entered the Corona del Mar High girls' soccer program as a sophomore. Stiver moved from Arcadia to Newport Beach in the fall of 2011 with her mother, step-dad and younger brother. The family wanted to be closer to the headquarters of PIMCO, the Newport Beach-based investment management firm for which Miranda's mother, Christina, works. The commute for Christina was indeed severely reduced. Miranda did not have so much trouble fitting in at CdM in the classroom, but on the soccer field she had doubts.

Everything you need to know about Tatum Norton can be found in the recent decision she made for college. Alabama had offered the Newport Harbor High senior a scholarship to play volleyball for the Crimson Tide. She said it was a three-year scholarship, something rare when it comes to the position Norton plays. Norton is a libero, a defender who must also provide accurate passing. An NCAA Division I scholarship for a libero? It almost seemed too good to be true. Apparently it seemed to be too easy for Norton.
