MISSION VIEJO -- Orange Coast College remained unbeaten in Orange Empire Conference play by topping Saddleback College, 75-70, in men's basketball Wednesday night. It was the Pirates' first win over Saddleback in 14 seasons. The Pirates (16-6, 3-0) were down by as much as 20 points in the first half, but rallied to take the lead for good on Steve Mendoza's three-pointer with 4:45 remaining in the game. Lance Ortiz led the way with 25 points and Mendoza added 14 points, including four three-pointers for the Pirates, who scored 50 second-half points.

COSTA MESA -- Five players scored in double figures for Orange Coast College on the way to an 86-83 victory over Irvine Valley College in Orange Empire Conference men's basketball Friday night. Steven Cornett scored a game-high 23 points to lead the Pirates (18-7, 5-0), ranked No. 7 in Southern California and No. 14 in the state. OCC had to hold off a surging Irvine Valley (15-11, 4-1) team in the second half. The Lasers scored 53 points after halftime. Reggie Brown hit four three-pointers and scored 12 points for the Pirates.

COSTA MESA - Matt DeMartino and Greg Worthing scored three goals each for Orange Coast College as the host Pirates defeated Cypress, 14-2, in Orange Empire Conference men's water polo Acton Wednesday. Mitch Probert, Sergio Gonzalez, Jeff Sample and Billy Swanson each scored twice for the Pirates (11-10, 3-2 in conference), who outscored the Chargers, 6-0, in the first quarter to ignite a rout. Cypress fell to 1-10, 0-6. OCC Coach Jason Gall sat nine of his 17 players for disciplinary reasons and got results from the eight who played, including goalie Graham Harvey (16 saves)

CYPRESS - Orange Coast College dropped a 63-58 decision in women's basketball Wednesday night as host Cypress captured the Orange Empire Conference matchup. The Pirates, 13-13, 3-6 in the OEC, had three players in double figures (Kirsten Melville with 14 points and Karyn Fierst and Nadia Mojhia with 13 apiece), but were unable to offset the 21-point scoroing of Randie Washington. CYPRESS - The Orange Coast College softball team suffered a 5-0 Orange Empire Conference loss to host Cypress Wednesday afternoon. Renee Snyder went 2 for 3 and had the Pirates' lone extra-base hit with a double as Cypress pitcher Diana Woodward allowed only three hits to improve her record to 7-5. OCC falls to 6-17-1, 1-15 in conference, while the Chargers improve to 24-13, 11-5. FULLERTON - The Orange Coast College women's basketball team jumped out to a big lead early and held on for a 65-60 Orange Empire Conference win over host Fullerton Wednesday night. Karyn Fierst led the Pirates with 20 points, while Kiersten Melville added 15 points. Also in double figures for Orange Coast was Jenette Redmond with 11 points and Kristen Urban (Newport Harbor High) with 10. Anthony Spezza led the Pirates (6-6, 1-1 in conference) with five goals, while Matt McKinney added three and Jeff Sample chipped in two. In goal, Graham Harvey came through with 12 saves.
