IRVINE - On Billie Jean King Night, the first one 100 fans received a free bobblehead of the tennis icon. That meant about half of everyone who came to watch the Orange County Breakers play on Wednesday night got a bobblehead. The turnout at the Bren Events Center on the UC Irvine campus looked small. The number of tickets sold was 932, but inside an arena that sits 5,000, around 200 fans showed up. The fanfare for the local World Team Tennis appears to have dropped since the Breakers left Newport Beach last year, much of it because of the larger size of the new venue.

For the second straight year, the Orange County Breakers have a totally new roster of players. But the 2013 Breakers scream "Orange County," perhaps more than any other team in the Mylan World Team Tennis franchise's 11-year history. Steve Johnson starred at Orange High, and his father, Steve Sr., is a Breakers assistant coach this year. Coco Vandeweghe lives in Newport Beach, and Breakers Coach Trevor Kronemann, who is back for his seventh year at the helm, lives in Mission Viejo.

IRVINE - John-Patrick Smith does not think about his ATP Tour ranking when he steps onto the court for the Orange County Breakers. Some might think Smith would get blown off the court by the Sacramento Capitals' 6-foot-8 South African player, Kevin Anderson. Anderson is ranked No. 33 on the ATP Tour; Smith is ranked just 217. In World Team Tennis, numbers like that can get thrown out the window. All the Orange County Breakers know is that Smith, the Australian, has helped them to the verge of the playoffs.

For nine years, they were known as the Newport Beach Breakers. For the past two years, they were the Orange County Breakers. Now, they've just made a break for it. World Team Tennis' Orange County franchise has been sold to Canadian entrepreneur Lorne Abony and will be relocating to Austin, Texas, the league announced Thursday. The team will be renamed the Austin Aces and former world No. 1 Andy Roddick, who lives in Austin, will be on the roster. The move ends an 11-year run in Orange County for the Breakers.

IRVINE - In terms of Mylan World Team Tennis playoff positioning, Wednesday night's regular-season finale between the Orange County Breakers and Springfield Lasers meant absolutely nothing. The Lasers had already clinched the top seed in the Western Conference, while the Breakers had already been eliminated from playoff contention. But the Breakers still gave fans their money's worth in the season finale at Bren Events Center. Steve Johnson and Treat Huey won the final set of men's doubles as well as the ensuing super-tiebreaker, as Orange County captured a 20-19 victory to end its season.

I reacted quickly last month when Meg Broccolo, the Orange County Breakers' director of community relations and communications, asked me to participate in the Breakers' tennis clinic for season-ticket holders. I immediately said yes. But when Tuesday afternoon came at the UC Irvine tennis courts, I became a bit nervous. After all, I didn't want to embarrass myself. Watching a lot of tennis for my job and playing the sport are two totally different things. I do have a background in tennis.

IRVINE - Bob and Mike Bryan, the twin duo widely considered the greatest men's doubles team of all time, made a rare Southern California appearance Tuesday night at the Bren Events Center. The Orange County Breakers played host to the Bryan brothers and visiting Texas. But there was no rolling over here for the home team against the Bryans, who currently hold all four Grand Slam men's doubles titles and won the gold medal last year at the London Olympics. The Bryans, from Camarillo, did not win a set. The Breakers continued their recent hot play, winning their third Mylan World Team Tennis match in a row, 23-17, over the Wild.

Several of his buddies were on hand, including mascots from Vanguard University (a lion), Chivas USA soccer, Pepperdine University (a wave) and "Bernie" from the Inland Empire 66ers baseball team. The mascots made members of the small crowd at Bren Events Center laugh. The tennis made them applaud. Orange County earned its most lopsided victory of the Mylan World Team Tennis season, topping rival Sacramento, 21-13.

IRVINE - Andy Roddick brought in by far the biggest home crowd of the season so far for the Orange County Breakers on Saturday night. Roddick, the former World No. 1 who retired from the pro tour last September, was playing his sixth Mylan World Team Tennis match in six nights. It seemed like a lot for Roddick. He said in a prematch press conference that he hadn't hit the ball too much in the last few months. "I work out all the time," Roddick said. "I just haven't been hitting tennis balls.

Andy Roddick might have thought that it would be the end of grueling travel schedules when he retired from professional tennis last September. That hasn't entirely been true for Roddick, the former world No. 1 and 2003 U.S. Open champion. This week has been jam-packed for him as he plays Mylan World Team Tennis, with six matches in six nights. The last match on Roddick's schedule is Saturday night at 7, when he and the Springfield Lasers visit the Orange County Breakers at UC Irvine's Bren Events Center.
