Orange Coast College has begun the process of hiring a new football coach, who may be the head coach, share head-coaching duties with current coach Mike Taylor, or merely be a coordinator while being groomed to eventually take over for Taylor, Pirates Athletic Director Michael Sutliff said Friday. Sutliff said a notice announcing the opening will likely be posted online as quickly as Jan. 2 and it will list the job as a head-coaching position. WOMEN'S BASKETBALL Chaffey College 63, Orange Coast College 62 Guard Chanelle DiCroce produced 13 points and 10 rebounds as the Pirates opened the Erin Tomlinson Coast Christmas Classic at home on Wednesday. Dominique Worthy hit a game-winning jumper with 12 seconds left to lift Chaffey into the championship semifinals against Cuesta College on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. The Pirates (8-4) resume tournament play on Thursday against Palomar in a consolation semifinal at 3:30 p.m. Raechelle Davis finished with 11 points, 11 rebounds and two blocks for OCC, and Jasmine Matar had 13 points and nine rebounds.

Corona del Mar High's football team looks to continue its historic season. The Sea Kings jumped out to a 10-0 first-quarter lead against Ojai Nordhoff and that is where the two teams stand at halftime of the CIF State Southern California Regional Division III Bowl Game on Saturday at Orange Coast College. The winner advances to the CIF State Division III Bowl Game on Dec. 21 at the StubHub Center in Carson at noon. The Sea Kings, the three-time CIF Southern Section Southern Division champions, blocked two punts and intercepted two passes in the first half.

The Corona del Mar High football team is still perfect. The top-seeded Sea Kings took over in the second half, beating second-seeded Garden Grove, 42-21, in the CIF Southern Section Southern Division championship at Orange Coast College on Friday, giving CdM an unprecedented third straight section title. The Sea Kings improved to 14-0 for the first time in the program's history. They outscored Garden Grove, 28-7, in the final two quarters. Tailback Anthony Battista sparked CdM with 163 yards and two touchdowns on 11 carries.

Orange Coast College plans to use a $1-million donation to fund the development of an Astronomy Village in the college's science quad area, OCC spokesman Doug Bennett announced Wednesday. The money was provided by a donor, who lives in Orange County and has donated to the college previously, but wishes to remain anonymous, Bennett said. The donation will fund fixed telescopes for research, an Astronomy Students and Visiting Scholars Conference Center that the college plans to open by fall 2015 and a mirror grinding and optics lab, which will allow students to make their own telescopes.

Orange Coast College sophomore goalkeeper Nathan Brown has been named Orange Empire Conference Co-Most Valuable Player to highlight eight Orange Coast College players recognized on the coaches' all-conference selections in men's soccer. Brown, who helped lead the Pirates (10-4-4, 9-2-3 in conference) to their first conference title since 1991, is joined on the first team by sophomore repeat honoree Jorge Sanchez, sophomore Thales Serra, as well as freshmen defenders Blake Mooney and Josh Madrid.

WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY State championships FRESNO - Orange Coast College won its second consecutive state title in dominant fashion on Saturday at Woodrow Park. Sophomore Leanne Allen led the Pirates, finishing sixth in 18 minutes, 18.26 seconds, followed by sophomore teammate Karen Silvas (eighth in 18:28.47). OCC totaled 73 points, 53 better than runner-up Glendale. Rounding out the OCC scorers were sophomore Raeanna Cortez (17th in 18:57.65), sophomore Allison Nagel (22nd in 19:05.47)

The Orange Coast College women's basketball team will honor the 2003 state-championship team prior to Friday night's 7:30 p.m. game against El Camino. Several players will be on hand for the event as the Pirates honor the 10th anniversary of their only women's basketball state championship in school history. That 2002-03 team went 31-6 and pulled off several upsets along the way to claim the state title. After finishing second in the Orange Empire Conference, OCC earned a No. 4 seed and opened postseason play with a 55-47 win over Cerritos.

MEN'S BASKETBALL Vanguard 90, Chapman 71 Senior guard Preston Wynne made four three-pointers on his way to a game-high 20 points to lead the host Lions in the nonconference game on Tuesday. Junior guard Chris Gorman added 14 points, while DeAngelo Jones chipped in 10 points and eight assists for the winners (5-1). Zach Allmon had nine rebounds and eight points, while Myles Smith added four points, two assists and four steals off the bench. Corona del Mar High and Orange Coast College product John Joyce had seven points for Chapman (1-1)
