Estancia def. Ocean View COSTA MESA — While watching Ocean View during the pre-match warm ups Thursday, Estancia High Coach Jim Huffman thought the Eagles were going to have their hands full. They didn’t as they swept Ocean View for the second straight year, with a 25-23, 25-19, 25-11 nonleague victory at home. “We were 1-6 against them the last five years,” said Huffman, a fifth-year coach. “They were pretty tall.” The Eagles (8-2)

When the fourth quarter begins Amy Gentling transforms. The change is slight because Gentling is only a sophomore and in her first year on the Costa Mesa High girls' varsity basketball team, but it is still apparent. The defensive intensity is picked up, the shooting is smoother and her motor never registers empty. As the Mustangs' shooting guard, the reliance on Gentling to score increases exponentially when the game is on the line. And Gentling, the Daily Pilot Female Athlete of the Week, has been an integral part in the Mustangs' resurgence heading into Orange Coast League play.

COSTA MESA — The Costa Mesa High girls' basketball team proved it was hungry, holding visiting Ocean View to five fourth-quarter points in a 35-31 nonleague win Thursday at Costa Mesa. After the postgame meeting with Coach Jim Weeks, the Mustangs emphasized again just how hungry they were. "Dinner on Weeks," they shouted with grins on their faces. Weeks shrugged it off, telling the team that they were "about halfway there." But Costa Mesa (6-8) looked further along than that, avenging a 47-37 loss to their former Golden West League foes (6-6)

HUNTINGTON BEACH ? Rebounding has been a chink in the Costa Mesa High boys' basketball team's armor this season. Sometimes it is exposed by an opponent's size and sometimes by self inflicted wounds. Tuesday at Ocean View was a little bit of both. The Seahawks brought size, five players 6-foot-5 or taller, and the Mustangs couldn't find their shooting touch which Costa Mesa Coach Jeff McDaniel said is the team's key defense against being taken advantage of in rebounding. Thirty-two minutes later the Seahawks had a 67-53 nonleague win, their second in a row, and the Mustangs never led and left with their second straight loss by 10 or more points.
