COSTA MESA - The Costa Mesa High doubles team of Hang Nguyen and Minh-Thy Pham earned its first sweep of the season, but visiting Ocean view prevailed, 14-4, in a nonleague girls tennis match Monday. Nguyen, a sophomore, and Pham, a junior, won 18 of 24 games, but the Mustangs fell to 2-5. Ocean View improved to 7-0. Patrick Laverty In the first round of Golden West League play, when Costa Mesa High lost to defending boys basketball champion Ocean View by five points, Tony Krikorian made seven three-pointers. On Thursday, in a rematch at Costa Mesa High, the Mustangs made just seven field goals. As a result, the Seahawks' margin of victory climbed dramatically and Ocean View remained undefeated in league play with a 68-27 shellacking of Costa Mesa. "They've won, I think, 63 league games in a row," Costa Mesa Coach Bob Serven said.

Estancia High's Marcus Sostak dominated the Costa Mesa Golf & Country Club's Mesa Linda course, shooting a two-under 33 to lead Estancia in a Golden West League boys' golf matchup against Costa Mesa and Ocean View on Thursday. The Eagles shot 189 to win the double-dual match, with Costa Mesa scoring 229 and Ocean View finishing with 241. COSTA MESA -- The Costa Mesa High girls' basketball team earned a 35-29 lead over Ocean View in a Golden West League game Monday, but went cold and wound up falling, 43-36. The Mustangs scored just one point in the final 3:46 to fall to 6-12, 1-3 in league. Costa Mesa, which has struggled with its field-goal percentage of late, was just 3 of 16 from the field in the final eight minutes. Tracy Bjelland had 13 of her game-high 15 points after halftime, including eight in the third quarter to help the Mustangs take the lead.
