MEN'S BASKETBALL Orange Coast 78, Santa Ana 70 SANTA ANA - Sophomore Marquis Ransom finished with 25 points and made 11 of 12 free throws in the Pirates' Orange Empire Conference game on Friday. Robert Grepo had 12 points for OCC (11-14, 2-8 in conference), which ended Santa Ana's three-game winning streak. The Pirates converted 24 of 27 free throws. Santa Ana is 15-9, 5-5.

Orange Coast College sophomore Devaun Evans, who led the Pirates in scoring (16.3 per game) and rebounding (5.7 per contest) has been named first-team All-Orange Empire Conference in men's basketball. Evans, a 6-foot-4 forward, led OCC in minutes played (23.4 per game). He played in 23 games, starting 17. Brad Buchignani, a 6-1 freshman guard who averaged 12.6 points and 19.2 minutes per game, represented the Pirates on the second team. He played in all 29 games and started 19. OCC finished 9-20, 3-9 in conference play.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL Mt. San Jacinto 63, Orange Coast 41 SAN DIEGO - Freshman Dayanara Armenta scored 17 points to lead the Pirates in the championship game of the San Diego Mesa tournament on Saturday at San Diego Mesa. Armenta earned all-tournament honors for OCC (7-6), for which sophomore Michelle Angel had eight points. On Friday, OCC defeated San Diego Mesa, 63-47, behind 22 points from Armenta. Sophomores Jessica Johnson and Jenna Arnett had 16 and 10 points, respectively, against San Diego Mesa.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL Irvine Valley 55, Orange Coast 54 IRVINE - Dayanara Armenta scored a game-high 23 points for the Pirates in the Orange Empire Conference game Friday. Jenna Arnett added 10 points and Michelle Angel had eight points and seven rebounds for OCC (9-10, 0-3 in conference). The Lasers' Amber Wharton hit the game-winner with 0.3 seconds left. She nailed a short jumper in the lane after retrieving a loose ball from her missed shot that was batted out. IVC is 14-7, 3-0. * MEN'S BASKETBALL Irvine Valley 66, Orange Coast 62 IRVINE - Jordan Pellum and Jo Jo Trinidad scored 12 points each for the Pirates in the Orange Empire Conference game Friday.

MEN'S GOLF Tee Off Classic CHINO HILLS — Sophomore Kyle Melchiorre shot three-under-par 143 to earn medalist honors and lead Orange Coast College to the team title in the two-day event completed Wednesday at Los Serrano Golf Course. Melchiorre shot 71 and 72 on the north course (par 72) and the south course (par 74), respectively, to help the Pirates top the 16-team field with a score of 741. BASEBALL Orange Coast 7, El Camino 4 The host Pirates rallied from deficits of 3-0 and 4-3 and scored four in the eighth inning to prevail in the first game of a Southern California Regional playoff series Friday. Sophomore outfielder Tommy Bell drove in the go-ahead run in the eighth and was three for four, while Orange Empire Conference Player of the Year Cody Nulph was three for four with one run batted in for the winners (28-9). OCC starting pitcher David Hill allowed four runs, all earned, on eight hits in seven innings and was not involved in the decision.

MEN'S TRACK & FIELD State championships SAN MATEO - Sophomore Austin Pollok finished fifth in the hammer throw to top Orange Coast College athletes competing on Friday and Saturday at San Mateo College. Pollok's mark was 173 feet, 3 inches. OCC sophomore Cameron Pizzica finished eighth in the decathlon with 6,069 points. He topped the field with a pole vault of 14-5 1/4. The Pirates' five team points ranked 29th among 36 teams who scored at the event. * WOMEN'S TRACK & FIELD State championships SAN MATEO - Freshman Reanna Cortez topped Orange Coast College finishers with a seventh-place showing in the 1,500 meters in the meet contested Friday and Saturday at San Mateo College.

COSTA MESA - Dillon Emery and Chris Van Vuuren each recorded six kills, helping the Orange Coast College men's volleyball team win the Pacific Coast Conference title for the second straight season with a 26-14, 25-18, 25-15 sweep of San Diego City on Wednesday. The Pirates (13-4, 10-1 in conference) play one more match against Palomar College on Friday at 6 p.m. before competing in the state semifinals at Long Beach City College on Thursday. The time and opponent haven't been determined.

Orange Coast College will unveil its new 9-foot Steinway concert piano Oct. 5 during a special concert celebrating the $4.8-million renovation to its music department facilities. Music professor Brian Gould will play Gershwin's "Concerto in F" accompanied by the OCC symphony, conducted by professor Ric Soto. The symphony will also perform Prokofiev's "Lieutenant Kije Suite" and a rendition of a "Medley of Gershwin Songs" during the concert. Concert attendees will also have the opportunity to tour the renovated music facilities, which include a new recital hall and redesigned rehearsal spaces.

Orange Coast College sophomore right tackle Taylor Evans was named Most Valuable Player at the postseason football banquet, Pirates Coach Mike Taylor said. "We haven't had an offensive lineman named MVP for a long, long time, but he was our best football player," Taylor said of the 6-foot-4, 300-pounder out of Fort Union, Va. Taylor said Evans, a two-year starter for the Pirates, is considering scholarship offers from Boise State, Nevada, Indiana State, Memphis State and Middle Tennessee.
