COSTA MESA — The old adage of "Hit'em where they ain't" was not followed by the Orange Coast College softball team during Thursday's 4-1 Orange Empire Conference loss to visiting Fullerton College. Despite just one run on three hits, several pitches were hit hard by the Pirate batters, but were caught by various members of the Hornets' defense. In the fourth, Kayla Blanco hit a line shot up the middle, but second baseman Steph Martinez made the backhand catch. One inning later, with a runner on first and just one out, Ashley Arrington hit a shot deep in the hole, but shortstop Tiffany Kaiser made a diving stop and retired the baserunner at second for a key out. And finally, in the seventh, the final out of the game was recorded on a nice catch in the alley by rightfielder Emily Perez.

A pair of area women's basketball teams are in first place in their respective conferences, but perennial Golden State Athletic Conference title contender Vanguard is not one of them. UC Irvine (11-4) is 3-0 in the Big West Conference, tied for first with Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, heading into two crucial home games against third-place UC Santa Barbara (8-7, 2-1 in conference) on Thursday and Cal Poly (7-7, 3-0) on Saturday. The Anteaters, off to the program's best start since the 1984-85 team opened 13-3, are still battling to earn respect after struggling in Coach Molly Goodenbour's first two seasons at the helm.
