COSTA MESA — Coach Jeff Brinkley said Friday night’s scrimmage against Notre Dame of Sherman Oaks gave his Newport Harbor High football team a chance to get up to speed. The Sailors saw plenty of speed from Notre Dame, which scored on two 70-yard touchdown passes at Estancia High. But Brinkley’s team recovered and scored five touchdowns of its own against the Knights, who found the end zone three times. “Overall, we did a good job,” Brinkley said.

SHERMAN OAKS — Why stop at round one? Having made the CIF football playoffs after missing them last year, the Newport Harbor High Sailors didn’t see fit to just lie down and take a first-round loss. Instead, they extended their season with a gasp-inducing 7-3 win over Notre Dame of Sherman Oaks Friday night in the first round of the CIF Southern Section Pac-5 Division playoffs. It was the Tars’ first postseason victory since winning the Division VI championship in 2005.

Richard Dunn When former Estancia High and Notre Dame football standout Vince Klees was informed of a newspaper reporter's desire to interview him for the Daily Pilot Sports Hall of Fame, he first had a simple request. "Will you please explain to my daughter what this phone call is about?" Klees said, before handing the phone to his youngest of three daughters, 15-year-old Gretchen, while his plea was granted. In these pages, of course, his name brings back tremendous memories of Estancia football and wrestling in the early 1970s, and, despite what the four women in his Geneva, Ill., household might think, Klees will always be considered one of the all-time great centers in Newport-Mesa School District football history.

Thirty minutes remained on the clock before the Irish could claim their first perfect regular season since 1949 and claim the undisputed honor as the nation's No. 1-ranked team in college football.

Barry Faulkner COSTA MESA - The Corona del Mar High boys basketball team rode its thoroughbred in the fourth quarter, but it was a plow horse which got the Sea Kings to the stretch. CdM senior Joel Templeton, a 6-foot-7 center, scored 12 of his career-high 17 points in the first half and also turned visiting Notre Dame of Sherman Oaks away repeatedly at the defensive end. But, even with Templeton's talents, which included eight rebounds and three blocked shots, CdM was down, 49-43, with 6:59 remaining in Tuesday's CIF Southern Section Division III-AA quarterfinal at Estancia High.
