Northwood High stamped itself as the favorite to win the Pacific Coast League boys soccer championship Wednesday, shelling visiting Estancia, 3-0, as the Timberwolves improved to 8-3-1 with its league-opening victory. Estancia Coach Steve Crenshaw watched his team fall to 3-7 overall, but had no complaints with his team's performance on Northwood's small field. "We played well," said Crenshaw. "We came to play and everyone played very well." Two factors played heavily in Estancia's demise, and those were injuries to defenders Abdul Kaiyum and Sergio Vivar, who suffered similar fates.

The memorial service for the late Jourdan Watanabe is now scheduled to begin at 3:30 p.m. Sunday at the Orange Coast College baseball field. Should it rain, plans are to hold the service in the OCC gymnasium, a school spokesperson said. Watanabe, a first-team All-Orange Empire Conference catcher in 2008 who was redshirting this season for the Pirates, died early Friday at a hospital after being found at an Irvine business with lacerations to his arms, wrists and torso. The business had its front windows smashed, police said.

Corona del Mar High senior standout Anne Yelsey, a nationally ranked player throughout her junior tennis career, has verbally committed to Stanford and will sign a letter of intent this week with the Cardinal, CdM Coach Andy Stewart confirmed Monday night. Yelsey chose Stanford over UCLA and Harvard. "I think she made the right choice," Stewart said. "(The Cardinal) offered her a full scholarship and they're the best tennis program in the country ... Tony Altobelli IRVINE - If Wednesday's contest with Huntington Beach was a golf matchup, the Estancia High boys basketball team would be calling for a "mulligan." The Eagles lost to the Oilers, 67-51, in consolation action at the Irvine World News Tournament, leaving Coach Chris Sorce wondering if anyone got the license of the truck that just hit his program. "We had been making positive strides the past few games, but tonight we went backward significantly," Sorce said.

Barry Faulkner COSTA MESA - Northwood High is making its varsity debut in Pacific Coast League boys volleyball this spring, but, even without seniors, the Timberwolves may be ahead of the Costa Mesa program. After mass defections, Coach Dave Sorrells and assistant Darlene Bailey have 12 eligible players in the entire program, with only one returning varsity player. But while they are still far from polished, Sorrells said he is more than pleased with the work ethic and attitude displayed by his inexperienced group.

Barry Faulkner For those who haven't noticed, Northwood High, it's campus still pristine and still months away from graduating its inaugural senior class, has officially claimed its long-rumored status as an athletic power. And, having taken enough lumps its first two or three seasons of varsity competition (depending on the sport) to keep it just under the releaguing radar, it will be terrorizing Pacific Coast League competition -- namely Corona del Mar -- the next four years as a member of the powerhouse projection program.

Richard Dunn Former Orange Coast College and Estancia High basketball coach Tim O'Brien, now the boys basketball coach at Northwood High, underwent emergency aorta surgery earlier this week and is recovering in the intensive care unit at UC Irvine Medical Center, Northwood Athletic Director Rick Curtis said Thursday night. "We were actually holding our breath on that one," Curtis said of the six-hour surgery late Monday night, in which doctors successfully replaced a damaged part of the aorta, the heart's largest artery that carries blood to the body.

IRVINE - This has been a difficult year at times for the Corona del Mar High girls' soccer team. The Sea Kings lost the Battle of the Bay game for the first time in four years. In the Pacific Coast League, they seemed to always be chasing Northwood for first place. Yet, in the span of 20 brilliant, emotional, heart-stopping minutes, the Sea Kings cast all of that aside Thursday at Northwood High. The bid for a fourth straight outright league title seemed gone midway through the second half of the league finale.

Less than a quarter into the game, the Northwood High football team had already scored more points than Corona del Mar's first four opponents in the Pacific Coast League. The Timberwolves' junior quarterback, Brian Abel, was more than able. He engineered two touchdown drives, putting CdM into an early hole Friday night at Davidson Field. The response on defense came quickly. Northwood couldn't score again until the final minutes of the game, when CdM was well in control. The Sea Kings weren't going to miss out on their chance to make history.

Jocelyn Manderino wrote a telling quote on her Twitter account, @flip612, before the big game. "Never give up; for even rivers someday wash dams away," Manderino posted, the quote attributed to Arthur Golden. She added two hashtags, "#gameday" and "#drownthequeens. " The first-year Northwood High boys' water polo coach was certainly familiar with rival Corona del Mar in her high school days at Newport Harbor. As a senior, she helped the Sailors win their first CIF Southern Section Division 1 girls' title in 1999.

IRVINE - Newport Harbor High senior Curtis Fink has never been known for backing down from a physical game of water polo. On Saturday night at Northwood High, Fink and Sailors teammate Dan Stevens got a chance to show their skills against not high school kids, but the Argentina men's national team. Fink and Stevens were part of a Southern California all-star team put together and coached by Orange Lutheran Coach Steve Carrera. He was joined on the bench by his brother Ed, who is the former Vanguard University coach, and former Pepperdine coach Jack Kocur.

IRVINE - The chess match began before the tennis match Tuesday. Corona del Mar High girls' tennis coach Brian Ricker and Northwood coach Eric Keith each wanted their top singles player to avoid the other team's best player in the opening round. So Ricker put junior Lauren Thaxter at No. 2 singles, and Keith put junior Chloe Pham at No. 2 singles as well. Of course, the strategy doesn't work when both coaches are on the same page. Thaxter and Pham still played in the first round.

If there is one aspect (defense) that would be considered key (defense) to the success (defense) of this year's boys' water polo team (defense) at Northwood High school, the answer is clear. Ask first-year coach Chris Murin, and you hear it over and over again. That's right, it's defense. Northwood is off to a good start to the season, winning two of its first three games. Murin has come to Northwood to coach both the boys' and girls' teams after coaching previously at Palos Verdes High, and he immediately went to work to change things around, focusing on defense and the counter attack.

In the land of swimming powerhouses, Northwood High is making waves. Northwood's boys' swimming team upended perennial power Corona del Mar earlier in the week, 106-64. The final score might have been a bit deceiving, because CdM was without five of its top swimmers, away because of obligations to their club teams. But as they say, a win is a win is a win. And a win over the defending Pacific Coast League champ is big. "This is a huge confidence builder for the boys," said Northwood coach Alex Nieto, now in his third year leading the program.
