Lana Chandler and Denice Mock, both of Newport Beach, earned their stripes as co-chairs of the Sophisticates' annual spring fashion show and luncheon. The recent extravaganza at the Hyatt Regency in Irvine attracted nearly 1,000 guests and raised close to $200,000. Funds will be directed to the family counseling services of the Assessment Treatment Services Center, which the Sophisticates sponsor. The success of the event, underwritten in part by Nordstrom at South Coast Plaza, will ensure that the children who need help will continue to get help.

What makes a business blossom? What makes a store succeed? What makes a muskrat protect his musk? Forget that last one. Service -- that's what! Over the years, I have ranted, carried on and/or whined more than once about the dearth of service in this complex world of ours. But I have noticed of late, right here in the Land of Newport-Mesa, an encouraging, albeit subtle, change in the way some of our local purveyors purvey their goods and supply their services.

Fashion Island is scheduled to get a Nordstrom location in 2010, officials for the Irvine Co. announced Tuesday. The Seattle-based retailer, which operates 156 stores in 28 states, has signed a letter of intent to open a 138,000-square-foot outlet at Fashion Island. Nordstrom will join anchors Bloomingdale’s, Neiman Marcus and Macy’s at the open-air mall, which frequently advertises itself as a luxury shopping destination. “On the coup scale, I think this is big,” said Keith Eyrich, the Irvine Co.’s president of retail properties.

South Coast Plaza in Costa Mesa has long had an edge over Newport Beach’s Fashion Island among some dedicated shoppers: Nordstrom. That changes Friday, when Nordstrom will unveil its new 138,000-square-foot location at Fashion Island after months of planning and ongoing development. Not only will the store mean shopping, it is expected to add two things in short supply in the struggling economy: jobs and sales tax revenue for city coffers. “When the doors open, we will be providing the community with what they’ve been asking for years, and that’s Nordstrom,” said Laura Davis, Fashion Island’s senior marking director.

The left side of Ben Nordstrom's body has sure given him issues the past two years around this time. He is now dealing with tendinitis in his left elbow. The pain he can tolerate, more so than the two tears he suffered in his left shoulder last year. Through the latest setback, Nordstrom keeps wrestling for Newport Harbor High. At one point last year, he couldn't compete with a bad shoulder, even if his head said he could. He contemplated snapping his shoulder, so he could put on the singlet right away.

SOUTH COAST PLAZA — Costa Mesa police are looking for a man who reportedly snatched a Walnut woman's purse in the Nordstrom parking lot at South Coast Plaza on Friday morning. When the would-be thief grabbed Mariel F. Punsalan's purse around 11:40 a.m. Friday, the 27-year-old woman took off after him, yelling so she could get the attention of people around her. "I just screamed and made a commotion so hopefully people would help me," she said as a member of the Costa Mesa Crime Scene Investigation team gathered evidence near Sunflower Avenue and Plaza Drive.
