IRVINE ? Glenn Swanson won't be able to stay on the UC Irvine baseball team after this season, making this year the swan song for the redshirt senior. But Swanson will stay in the record books long after he departs UC Irvine after Tuesday's performance. The left-hander threw the Anteaters' first no-hitter since 1974 and had a career-high 14 strikeouts as UC Irvine toppled San Diego, 7-0, in a nonconference game at Anteater Ballpark. Swanson, who felt sick before the game and didn't think he had much zing on his pitches in the bullpen, has thrown 13 innings of no-hit ball in his last two starts.

Bryce Alderton The second go-around for Newport Harbor High's softball team against Foothill ended in similar fashion, a loss, but Sailors' Coach Mike Davis could extract more positives he hopes his team can build on heading into the final four games of the season. "There is no shame in losing, 2-0, to Foothill," said Davis, after the Sea View League-leading Knights improved to 19-6, 5-1 in league following a masterful performance in the circle from senior Kelsey Ferguson Friday at Newport.

Steve Virgen MISSION VIEJO - On the way to the first no-hitter of his young life, Newport Beach pitcher Michael Bloom broke an unsaid superstitious rule because of two simple reasons. He trusted his teammates. He was confident in his pitching. Bloom, who talked about the no-no before the final inning, completed a no-hitter with 10 strikeouts and three walks, leading the Newport Beach All-Stars AAA team of 9- and 10-year-olds to a 10-1 victory over the South Mission Viejo All-Stars Saturday at Youth Sports Park in Mission Viejo.

Newport Harbor High Coach Evan Chalmers faced this dilemma in the bottom of the fifth inning. Scott Ward made his decision a lot easier. Chalmers removed the starter after he walked the leadoff batter, Ward’s sixth walk. At the time, the Sailors’ scorekeeper had host Corona del Mar with zero hits.

CORONA DEL MAR - If all one saw of the Earthpack baseball team was Saturday's Newport Beach Little League majors division championship game, they likely would have concluded that Manager Jeff Fisher's squad was an irresistible force. But Earthpack's impressively efficient 7-2 victory over Dick's Sporting Goods notwithstanding, the up-down exercises Fisher incorporated into Earthpack's conditioning were a fitting metaphor for a 15-7 campaign that just happened to finish on the best possible note.

FULLERTON - This time, UC Irvine pitcher Andrew Thurman lost more than just a strong bid for a no-hitter. But in the opener of a three-game Big West Conference series on Friday, the host Titans washed away Thurman's would-be no-no on a leadoff single in the seventh...
