The Newport Mesa Blazers seventh-grade All-Net basketball team won the National Junior Basketball (NJB) Southern California "Super Sectional" tournament over the weekend of March 7 and 8. In pool play, Newport Mesa defeated Corona-Norco, 52-25, and got by Yorba Linda, 46-41. In the semifinals, Newport took care of Laguna Hills, 42-25, and then won the championship with a comeback victory in the finals over Irvine, 47-42. After finishing the regular season in fourth place in its 10-team division, Newport Mesa "peaked at just the right time," said head coach Mike Flamson.

The players on the Newport-Mesa sixth-grade boys’ NJB All-Star basketball team can call themselves national champions. The Newport-Mesa All-Stars, also known as the Spartans won the Nationals tournament last weekend at Cal State Fullerton. The Spartans earned wins against Hayward, Las Vegas, San Jose and San Diego to take the crown. These four wins concluded a run of 11 wins and one loss over the course of two months and four tournaments. The Spartans were led by tenacious defense that created numerous turnovers and an average margin of victory over 10. Offensively, the team was led by Cameron Hook, Brett Greenlee, Chad Redfearn and Hagen Truninger, while the defense and rebounding duties were led by Parker Reposa, Jake Hastings, Trevor Schwartz, Ryan Stone, Caleb O’Neil and Nick Belida.

Newport Mesa's sixth-grade NJB All-Stars answered a close-shave loss Saturday with a dominating win Sunday in the Orange County Tournament. R.J. D'Cruz scored a game-high 18 points to lead Newport to a 60-38 win over Anaheim Hills Sunday. He also grabbed five rebounds, while Niko Hernandez scored 11 and dished out six assists. Brandon Davis added eight points, Jon Howse six and Peter Hapke and John Hutchinson finished with four. Charley O'Desky kept Newport cruising with five points, while Trey LaGrandeur and David Wheatley put in two points each.

The Newport Mesa NJB Knicks won the Division Champion Series Tournament after defeating three Orange County teams. The Knicks, coached by Peter Helfrich, defeated Whittier, 54-32, to win the title. Michael Helfrich scored a game-high 26 points, while J.B. Green added 16. The Knicks dominated the boards, as Aaron Northcraft, Trey Lagrandeur and Martin O'Toole combined for 23 rebounds. On defense, Matthew Crouch, Erik Nutzke, Austin Apramian and Mike McKenna contributed solid efforts.

The Newport Beach Jazz dominated the backboards, and in the end, the basketball game, posting a 38-29 win over the Trabuco Bulls to win the National Junior Basketball's Division 2 series championship. Zak Maurer-Erickson led all scorers and rebounders with 15 and 12, respectively, followed closely by Cameron Chase (10 points), Chase Fredensberg (10 rebounds) and Ryan Rolfes (seven boards). Every member of the Jazz had at least two rebounds with Dominique Palmer, Chris Parten and Justin Wilson contributing to the Jazz' 44 boards.

The Spartans' boys' third- and fourth-grade team won the Newport-Mesa National Junior Basketball regular-season title after remaining undefeated at 10-0 and beating two top-ranked teams, the Magic and the Celtics in consecutive weeks. Luke Barnes, Augie Neubauer, Christopher Dolak, Matt Neiger, Travis O'Neil, Luke Redoutey, Adam Casler and Jordan Stucki came together as a team and worked hard every week to cap a fantastic regular-season run. The team was led by the high-scoring backcourt of Barnes, Stucki and Neiger while Neubauer, Dolak and O'Neil dominated the paint leading the team in rebounding, blocks and steals.

FULLERTON - There were just too many weapons from the Troy High girls basketball team and Corona del Mar had no answer as the Warriors scored a 70-29 victory in the quarterfinals of the Troy NJB Hoops Classic Tuesday at Troy High. Troy (3-0) built a 34-17 halftime lead and went on a 22-8 run in the third, paced by an aggressive defense and some accurate three-point shooting. The lone positive for the Sea Kings (2-2) was that they never gave up, CdM Coach Elbert Davis said.

Collin Pipkin and Connor Kincaid teamed up to help lead the Newport-Mesa Big Cats to a 51-26 win over the host Chino Valley Ballers in a fifth-grade All-Net boys’ basketball game. Pipkin scored 15 points, while Kincaid finished with 14 points, four rebounds and three steals. Mitch Haly and Matthew McDonald added eight points each. Chase Garbers, Will Ueberroth, Jake Jones, Will Rodosky and Luke Valvedis also scored for the Big Cats. Garbers led the team with six rebounds.

There are several goals for the young players in Newport-Mesa National Junior Basketball. Of course they want to win, but aside from victories, they use a certain achievement as motivation. They want to become an all-star. Newport-Mesa NJB announced Wednesday its 2010 boys’ Division 1 All-Star teams. The teams will represent the league at the NJB All-Star tournaments set for March 13-14 and March 20-21.
