The Newport-Mesa City Championships featured plenty of heroics and drama at Corona del Mar High last week. The local National Junior Basketball league was grateful to use the gym at CdM. The players made sure to leave some lasting memories there. * Lakers 31, Thunder 26 Division 1 boys Grades 7-8 The NJB Boys Division 1 City Championship game featured a battle between the 10-2 Thunder coached by Tom Joyce and Chuck Cargile and the 11-1 Lakers coached by Dan Whelan . In a fierce defensive struggle played in front of an enthusiastic crowd the Lakers prevailed.

Newport-Mesa National Junior Basketball will conduct clinics beginning Sunday at Costa Mesa High and Lincoln Elementary. The clinics at Costa Mesa High will begin at 12:45 p.m. and will last until 2 p.m. The clinics at Lincoln Elementary will begin at 2:45 p.m. and last until 4 p.m. Kindergarteners, first graders and second graders may participate in the clinic. Boys and girls will be instructed in basketball fundamentals by experienced coaches. The clinic will last for eight to nine weeks on Sundays at the two locations.

The Newport-Mesa Rockets, a National Junior Basketball Division 3 team, opened playoff action with a 39-37 overtime win against Huntington Beach. Michael Helfrich led the offense with 22 points, while Fletcher Della Grotta and Jack Yeager controlled the rebounding and added key points. Randall Nelson sparked the offense with key assists, while Tommy Stevens made the game's key defensive stop. In other NJB action: The Newport-Mesa sixth grade team took care of Villa Park, 45-27.

The Newport Mesa Sea Kings 4th Grade All Stars basketball team won the National Junior Basketball (NJB) Southern California Sectional tournament over the weekend of March 21 and 22.  In pool play, Newport Mesa, led by coach Troy Hall, defeated RSM Eagles 45-40, romped the El Toro United Stars 51-30 and dominated the Niguel Aliso Sharp Shooters 60-40.  All Star players include Ryan Meckler, Brett Super, Cameron Kormos, Preston Hartsell, Shan Dharod, Mikey Ruiz, Cole Kinder, Jacob Jones, Luke Vafiadis and Collin Pipkin.

The Newport-Mesa seventh grade All-Net squad defeated Fullerton, 45-37, in National Junior Basketball action recently to move into second place. Hunt Rychel led Newport-Mesa (5-2) with 12 points. Also chipping in were Matthew Helfrich (11), Nick Jones (11) and Junior Hernandez (10). Chad Stassel and Taylor Lobdell contributed with nine assists. David Holmes, Wes Dunlap and Jarret Daniel were solid on defense. In more NJB seventh-grade action: Riverside 59, Newport-Mesa 50 - Helfrich scored 12 points and had three assists for Newport-Mesa.

The Newport-Mesa National Junior Basketball third-grade All-Star boys' team completed its perfect season by winning the NJB national tournament last weekend in Hanford. The Newport-Mesa All-Stars defeated all-stars from Anaheim Hills, 51-23, in the title game. The team had qualified for the national tournament by winning its sectional tournament two weeks ago. The team featured: Luke Barnes, Vanis Buckholz, Rees Clasen, Adam Garza, Tommy Griffin, Asher Hamilton, Tyler Li, Eli Liechty, Hunter Schimmelpfennig and Mike Wein.

AYSO Region 120 Girls under 8 Surfer Girls vs. Dominators: The Surfer Girls played solid offense and defense. Clara Eddy, Teddie Hart, Priscilla Ocampo and Sydney Palmer combined in goal for the shutout, while Andie Lee and Nicole Sanchez continuously foiled the opponents' offensive attack. Offensively, the Surfer Girls were led by Olivia Kalatschan, Holly Nance and Heather Roberts, who combined for several breakaways and shots on goal. Tidal Wave vs. Purple Polar Bears: Destry Comp scored an early goal for the Tidal Wave, while teammates Julia Ackerman, Missy Taylor, Sienna Amoroso and Isabella Morris all took great dribbling runs at the goal.

BASKETBALL Championship game Anthony Tsai banked in a game-winning three-foot shot to lead the undefeated Pacers to a 40-39 win over the Jayhawks in the NJB championship game of the Newport-Mesa fifth- and sixth-grade boys’ division last week. With 16 seconds left and the Pacers trailing, 39-38, Cameron Hook drove the right side of the lane, as the Jayhawks defense collapsed on him. Hook went up for what looked to be a shot, but instead whipped a pass to Tsai.

The Newport-Mesa Warriors, a fifth- and sixth-grade boys’ team in the National Junior Basketball’s Division 2, defeated the Bears, 54-34, to complete an undefeated season (10-0) Sunday. Warriors Coach Charley Hurst said his players never appeared nervous about finishing the season with a perfect record. “They just had a great time,” Hurst said. “We had smart players. I could tell from the first practice that they were smart. They listened and understood.

Steve Virgen NEWPORT BEACH - Instead of living up to his nickname, Harold "Zippy" Levy used his smarts to pull off two stolen bases and scored twice on wild throws to lead the Cubs past the Mets, 7-1, in a Bronco division game of the Newport Harbor Baseball Association at Mariners Park Saturday. Zippy, who didn't know how he received his nickname, also closed the final inning and retired the side with three straight outs. On offense, he finished with two hits, including a double and an RBI. "He zipped into the world," said Gene Levy of his son's birth and subsequent nickname.

In a huge matchup of two top teams in the boys' third- and fourth-grade division of Newport-Mesa National Junior Basketball, the Spartans beat the Celtics, 41-39, in overtime to remain undefeated at 9-0 heading into the final regular-season game. The back-and-forth game was highlighted by two of the league's top players, Luke Barnes from the Spartans and Tommy Griffin of the Celtics. Both players dazzled the crowd with Griffin tallying 21 points and Barnes with 12 points, eight rebounds and six assists.

The Newport-Mesa National Junior Basketball All-Star girls' team of sixth-graders went undefeated at the sectional tournament last weekend and advanced to the national tournament. The Newport-Mesa All-Stars beat Villa Park, 46-26, at Beckman High to complete a 4-0 record in the tournament and secure a berth to the NJB national tournament, which begins March 31 and will be played throughout Orange County. The national tournament will include teams mainly from Southern California as NBJ is played in seven states, Newport-Mesa Coach Eddie Golden said.

The Newport-Mesa All-Star boys' basketball team of fourth-graders finished off its undefeated march to a National Junior Basketball national championship by defeating Placentia, 59-29, April 10. The title game was a rematch of a pool-play contest that had gone to double-overtime, but this one was not nearly as close. Newport took control early and never looked back. The champs played lock-down defense and limited a high scoring Placentia team well below its tournament scoring average of 61 per game.

The Newport-Mesa Cardinals won the Division 3 National Junior Basketball championship for third- and fourth-graders March 6. The team finished with an 11-3 record. The Cardinals included: Brad Humphreys, John Griffin, Colin Miehe, John Humphreys, Carson Klein, Jarrett Thompson, Declan Pene, Kieran Sidebotham, Luke Hatfield and Tommy Griffin. Brad Humphreys and John Griffin coached the team. — Reader submission All-Stars dominate The Newport-Mesa fourth-grade NJB Gold All-Star team dominated in its area tournament.

NJB Division I, 7-8 grade Jeffs-Bruins The Jeffs nipped the Bruins 31-27. Adam Freeman and Alex Murello led the Jeffs's attack with 8 points each. Lakers-Cordovas The Lakers' big men dominated, with Patrick Halle pouring in 30 points in the Lakers' 51-39 victory over the Cordovas. All Lakers scored, including Mitch Dean, Liam Murphy, Harrison Hewitt, Gage Thomas, Matt Alessi and John Redoutey. Wildcats -Spartans In a very physical hard fought close game the Wildcats just edged the Spartans, 27-25 Point Guard Jordan Hauser had 10 points with Blake Kormos scoring 6 and Corbin Thomson and Ford Secrist totaling 8 points between them.

Kevin Fults’ buzzer-beating game-winner provided a dramatic semifinal win for the Newport-Mesa National Junior Basketball All-Net seventh-grade boys’ team that captured the national tournament title Sunday. Fults lay-in at the buzzer gave the Newport-Mesa Tar Heels a 40-39 win over the Irvine Bruins. The Tar Heels rallied from a five-point deficit against the Bruins to finish the season at 20-3. In the final minutes, Riley Gaddis came up with a steal in a full-court press that led to an easy basket.

The Newport-Mesa third-grade All-Stars went undefeated, 4-0, at the Southern California National Junior Basketball Sectional Tournament March 20-21. Led by coaches Jeff Hamilton and Joe Schimmelpfennig , all players contributed in all four games. Newport-Mesa defeated Irvine, 53-48, in the championship game. Newport-Mesa will travel to Hanford March 26-28 to participate in the national tournament. The Newport-Mesa All-Stars will contend with All-Star teams from all over the west region.

Newport-Mesa NJB Registration is now open for the 2009-2010 Winter Youth Basketball League. All children in grades first through eighth, residing in Costa Mesa or Newport Beach may participate and register. To get information about the league, and to register, you must go online to: http://newportmesanjb.d4sportsclub.com There will be a skill evaluation for players on October 11 to assist in putting the teams together. The practices will begin October 31st and games will begin December 6 continuing until March, with a break for Christmas.
