Steve Virgen COSTA MESA - A lack of preparation wasn't the case for the Orange Coast football team, Saturday night. The Pirates were ready for anything from executing gimmick plays to woofing celebration chants. The preparation paid off for OCC as the Pirates gained 628 yards of offense, a school record, that led to a 55-21 Mission Conference Central Division victory over district rival Golden West. OCC broke the record of 587 yards set in 1950 against L.A. Valley.

Steve Virgen COSTA MESA - With each of its two losses this season the Orange Coast College football team has been presented with a challenge. The Pirates' first loss came against Los Angeles Harbor, when they surrendered five turnovers and succumbed to the Seahawks' passing game. The following week, OCC, with injuries to two of its defensive standouts, Dan Stringer and Marvin Simmons, traveled to El Camino and answered the call with a 14-10 come-from-behind win, that apparently energized the team.

Steve Virgen FULLERTON - Oh, have times changed for the Orange Coast College football team. In just five weeks, the Pirates have rid themselves of the underdog label. They have conquered challenge after challenge. And now they are the favorites. OCC's five-game winning streak seems to have everyone jumping on the bandwagon. The Pirates are ranked No. 10 in the state, even though they have beaten Nos. 1 and 2 (Mt. San Antonio and El Camino, respectively)

Steve Virgen FULLERTON - Orange Coast College's football game at Cal State Fullerton against Fullerton College was more of a trip to the Hornets' playground. While OCC relied on the momentum of a five-game winning streak, Fullerton deceived the Pirates with trick plays. Fullerton blindsided OCC's joyride with a 47-35 victory, Saturday, most likely ending the Pirates' chance for sole possession of the Mission Conference Central Division championship.

Steve Virgen COSTA MESA - There are two seemingly painful facts for the Orange Coast College football team as it hosts Pasadena City tonight at 7. And only one fact the Pirates can change to favor them. Fact: The Bucs will be without defensive standouts Marvin Simmons (abdominal strain), Dan Stringer (elbow) and Travis Loidolt (torn anterior cruciate ligament) for the rest of the season. OCC Coach Mike Taylor said Simmons and Stringer qualify for medical redshirts and will return next season.

Steve Virgen As the Orange Coast College football team prepares for its scrimmage at Santa Monica next week, the Pirates have one important question to answer: Who will be the starting quarterback? That question was left unanswered after the Pirates played in an inter-squad scrimmage Saturday. The offense ran 60 plays against the defense, with no score being kept. The OCC defense was the buzz of the scrimmage, which made the quarterback situation all the more hazy.

Steve Virgen NEWPORT BEACH - When Orange Coast College tight end Ben Fredrickson caught a touchdown on fourth down in the second overtime of the win over Santa Ana, it illustrated just how much the receiving corps has evolved. Quarterback Nick Higgs rolled to his left and looked to his first option, Justin Dale, but he was was covered. The freshman quarterback checked Dale off and then went to the reliable Fredrickson who snagged the pass before anyone could knock it away.

Steve Virgen WALNUT - Someone forgot to tell the Orange Coast College football team it was playing the No. 4 team in the nation. Someone forgot to tell the Pirates they got shut out last week, and that they have only scored nine points in three games this season. Someone, actually OCC Coach Mike Taylor, told his players they could beat Mt. San Antonio. He never stopped believing. The Pirates never stopped playing. And with one second remaining, Rob Pate knocked in a 33-yard field goal to shock host Mt. SAC, 26-25, Saturday night.

Steve Virgen What is a rivalry? Proximity, animosity and some sort of title on the line are some of the facets to a rivalry. Case in point: the Orange Coast College football team vs. Golden West tonight at 7 on the OCC campus. The Mission Conference Central Division opener between the Pirates and the Rustlers will feature the battle for the bell -- The Victory Bell, awarded to the winner of the OCC-Golden West game. Due to a Mission Conference realignment, the rival schools didn't play in 1998 or 1999.

Steve Virgen CERRITOS - His pace on the sidelines does not carry the same solid march it once did. But, the words from a man who has coached for 52 years still roar like a lion. A night along the sidelines of the Strawberry Bowl with Paul Briggs, 80, you find out that the lion is friendly. And that the lion has influenced many lives. It's 15 minutes before kickoff of the Strawberry Bowl and Briggs, Orange Coast College's special teams coach, talks with a friend, Bob Stone.
