HUNTINGTON BEACH - Eleven days had passed since Newport Harbor High last played a Sunset League baseball game. The Sailors resumed league play on Wednesday and they continued where they left off, in a rut. A lack of offense in league has plagued Newport Harbor, which lost at Edison, 5-1. In the last 21 innings in league, one run is all the Sailors have produced. They avoided a third straight shutout in league by scoring in the final inning. Edison starter Noah Kronfly went into the seventh having thrown only 60 pitches, one led to a Sailors hit. Newport Harbor recorded its second and third hits in the seventh, before Kronfly finished things off. He improved to 5-1 and moved the Chargers (15-5, 6-2 in league)

Corona del Mar High girls' swimming coach Doug Volding is always a bit apprehensive before the Battle of the Bay swim meet. He had reason to be nervous Wednesday. Volding found out shortly before the meet began that one of his top club swimmers, freshman Nicole Lin, would be out of action. Volding wasn't positive why, though he heard she may have hurt her shoulder. For the Sea Kings, who were already missing one of their best sprinters in Sami Pratt (dislocated collarbone), this was obviously cause for concern.

While some Newport Beach residents eagerly await the opening of Marina Park in two years, others already have cause for celebration. They've been promised some of the location's sand. To make way for the 23-slip marina planned for the new Balboa Peninsula park, crews will soon dredge more than 40,000 cubic yards of material from the harbor and redistribute it throughout the city's shoreline. It's a perfect source for reusable beach material — a highly sought-after commodity for beach dwellers who experience, quite literally, life's shifting sands.
