Mark Todd is coming back to Corona del Mar High yet again, not to lead the Sea Kings, but to coach against them. Todd has returned to CdM a handful of times since leaving the school five years ago. He's in his fourth season in charge of Newport Harbor, CdM's Back Bay rival. The schools have played five times since Todd moved across the bay. The sixth meeting is Tuesday, when Todd guides the No. 15-seeded Sailors (8-8) to his former stomping ground to open the U.S. Lacrosse Southern Section South Division playoffs against No. 2 CdM (13-1)

All she does is win, win, win, no matter what. Newport Harbor High senior Marissa Robertson can relate to that DJ Khaled song. This year in the pool, she has been unbeatable for the Sailors girls' swim team. Robertson has won all of her individual races all year long. The 50-yard freestyle, 100 free, 100 breaststroke, 100 butterfly? No problem. On Tuesday in a Sunset League meet against Marina, Robertson even threw in the 200-yard individual medley for good measure. "I don't usually swim 200s," Robertson said the next day, able to laugh because she again touched first, before any of her competition.

With two balls, two strikes and two outs in a 2-2 game, the deuces truly were wild for Fountain Valley High baseball senior Daniel Patzlaff on Friday afternoon. Patzlaff, who wears jersey No. 2 for the Barons, saw a pitch he liked in the top of the fourth inning. It was down and in, but he managed to hit it out to right field. The two-run home run was — you guessed it — Patzlaff's second round-tripper of the season. And it helped the Sunset League-leading Barons earn their second win over Newport Harbor in three days, 4-2, at the Sailors' field.

Senior Kole Escher produced five goals, setting a Newport Harbor single-season school record for goals with 52, as the Sailors walloped Edison, 20-5, in a Sunset League boys' lacrosse finale at Davidson Field on Friday. Escher broke Zach Gagnon's mark of 49 set in 2009. Escher became the first Sailor to score a goal in each of the program's regular-season games, helping Newport Harbor win its sixth straight and improve to 8-8 overall and 6-2 in league. The 20 goals also set a single-game school record for Newport Harbor, which placed second in league.

What a game! What a game! That might be a simple way to describe what took place Wednesday night at Davidson Field, where Newport Harbor High and Marina battled in a wild and crazy boys' lacrosse game. But Sailors Coach Mark Todd probably put it best when talking about the way his guys took a much-needed 13-11 victory over the Vikings, who featured former Tars assistant Ryan Abatte as their head coach. "A perfect storm for disaster," Todd said before addressing his victorious Sailors in a post-game meeting.

FOUNTAIN VALLEY - Having picked up a key Sunset League victory Friday over Edison High, the Newport Harbor baseball team ventured to Fountain Valley on a blustery Wednesday, hoping to keep its momentum going against the league-leading Barons. The Sailors played on even terms with the third-ranked team in CIF Southern Section Division 1 on a wind-whipped afternoon, but Fountain Valley put up the go-ahead run in the bottom of the fifth inning and made it stand to come away with a 3-2 victory.

Early in the season, adversity struck the Newport Harbor High boys' lacrosse team. During the first five games, the Sailors lost a starter to injury each contest, Coach Mark Todd said. There were some broken collarbones to some players, Todd said, as well as a broken hand to talented freshman midfielder Chandler Pierce, who was lost for the season. It all became challenging for the Sailors, who stumbled early in the Sunset League season as well, as some players recovered from injury and others left for spring-break trips.
